Octavia Scout gone, Leon ST now here

Featured Replies

We traded in our Octavia Scout the other day for a SEAT Leon ST FR, hopefully it will be as reliable as the Scout has been.

Anyway some pics:

Suprised to still have a CD player as the MY16 Octavias have lost them?

We have had 4 Skodas in a row, so fancied a change. (Still got a Mk1 Fabia though)

The Leon has a 1.4 TSI ACT engine with 150ps so a little less than the Scout (1.8 TSI) but due to the difference in weight the Leon feels very nippy.

The Leon is an MY16 and is is specced with Full Link so it has apple carplay.

V nice, think the Leon ST is a v good looking car.

Something I would miss....although you have the Tech pack with LED lights, they dont come with headlamp washers (as because they are below a certain wattage they dont need them by law unlike xenons) so you'll probably be missing the low fluid sensor. Its a personal thing though.

Also RE the MIB2 infotainment seems as though the Mk7 Golfs also retain the CD player so only Skoda who have chosen to lose it by the looks of it.

Nice looking car. Will probably have a look at them myself when the Octys need replacing.

looked (briefly) at one last week   any thoughts /reviews welcome :sun:

Look very nice. How is the ride compared with the Scout?

(I find my Scout rides much more smoothly than my vRS - I know the vRS is supposed to be firmer, but it can feel harsh after a run in the Scout.)

Good point about the headlight washers, the early tech pack Leon's came with them but not anymore.

I pulled the fuse to stop them working on the Scout as they used to drive me nuts and waste a lot of water. I didn't realise about the water level warning though, our mk1 Fabia vRS has the level warning without headlamp washers so hopefully the Leon might? Time will tell.

The ride is firmer than the Scout but less crashy, the Leon seems more supple. The ride is a lot better than our completely standard Fabia vRS though, I guess the fact that the Leon weighs less than the Fabia helps.

I will update this thread once we have some miles on the clock, but so far really liking the Leon.

If anyone is after a tidy Scout 1.8 TSI with FSSH (42K miles) from the original supplying dealer, it is standard spec plus factory xenons, multi functional steering wheel and maxidot, then pm me and I'll tell you what garage is selling it.

It is easy to check the published specs but these never tell the real story.

What is the boot size comparison like?

I love our Octavia Scout because it has a huge boot, enough rear leg room for the kids but isn't as big (externally) as most regular family estates.

The picture of the Leon's boot makes it look as big as the Scouts?

The Leon boot is smaller but I haven't got the Octavia to compare.

The Leon ST boot is 1000mm long at the longest point, 1000 between the wheel arches, 535/430 high to the tonneau cover depending on floor position.

The Leon ST wheel well will take a 205/55R16 wheel/tyre and still allow the floor to sit on the lowest position, the Leon hatch will only take a space saver.

I think the mk2 Octavia was longer, higher, maybe a fraction wider but also more square.

I thought I would update this thread even though it's not a skoda.

The first mod fitted was the rearguard bumper protector in black, it contrasts well with the black lower part of the bumper I think.
You need to make 2 small cut outs on the bumper protector for the rear parking sensors, I used a dremel as one of the grinding wheels was just the right size.
Part number of the bumper protector in black is RBP702.

Next I fitted front and rear mudflaps:

Front (Part number 5F0075111)

Rear (Part number 5F0075101D)

20150901_151642_zpsl0xtxrib.jpg

The nearside rear was a pig to fit as the fitting instructions fail to mention that an aluminium rivet that holds some exhaust heat foil, is in the exact same place where you need to fit the supplied speedclip for the bottom mudflap screw.
As such I had to remove the aluminium rivet using a hacksaw blade, (no clearance for a drill unless you have ramps) and then fit the speed clip.

Then fitted genuine metal pedals as the FR comes with standard rubber ones for some reason.
These are listed for "VW Golf mk7, Passat B8" but they fitted perfectly (Part number 5G2064200)

Also fitted some rubber mats over the top of the carpet mats to keep them clean.

Last weekend I fitted a Street Guardian SG9665GC dash cam to the Leon. I've got the same cam in our other car, so bit the bullet and fitted one to the Leon as well.

I fitted a double 12v socket extension (£3 from The Range) to the space next to the fuse box. I cut the plug of it and connected it to using fuse taps and a switch.

20151025_110634_zps8ap9sdam.jpg

Doing it this way means I don't have to cut into any existing wiring.

I fitted a single pole, double throw switch, so I can either have the dashcam switch on with ignition or on all the time.

20151030_145935_zpslzcw3u1g.jpg

I hid the switch in a blank in the glove box next to the airbag switch:

20151030_165825_zpstx0nbjfq.jpg

Normally the switch will be in position I, so it switches on with ignition, but if I park somewhere dodgy for a couple of hours, I can flick the switch to position II and the dashcam is powered permanently.
I then removed the passenger A pillar trim and hid the power lead behind it and also behind the front edge of the head lining.

20151025_110820_zpshgt2vsay.jpg

It took a while to get the position right due to the rain sensor housing on the windscreen.

Nice work with the Dashcam, looks pretty discreet and blends in well. I really like the new Leon, it's a good car!

Going from a Scout you should have got the X-perience!

Seriously considering a Leon ST FR for my next car. Just wondering whether to go for the 1.4 or 1.8 engine. No dealer remotely close to me seems to have a 1.8 (hatch or ST) demo car.

I love the colour of your car but my wife has vetoed that colour as it is very close to that of her 2010 Clio.

I haven't updated this for a while.

The Leon has now done 11.5k miles, we are getting 43-46mpg just running around and mid to high 50's on a run. Those numbers are nowhere near what SEAT quote but I didn't think they would be, we estimated mid 40's when we bought the car, so we are happy with the economy.

We haven't had any problems with the car so far, the first service went without any problems.

My only criticism of the car is the comedy long gearing that it uses. I know they are long geared for economy and emissions purposes, but as it has 6 gears, I do sometimes think they could have made the first 4 or 5 gears a bit lower.

I think this long gearing issue is the same across a lot of new VAG cars though. I recently drove a 2014 Seat Ibiza 1.2 TSI (105 PS) and it also had very long gearing.

Build quality wise, nothing has fell off (yet) and the quality seems just as good as our mk2 Scout.

I had a drive in a MY15 Leon Cupra 280 a few months ago, wow, very quick. Also as the Cupra has the adaptive dampers, even running on 19" wheels the ride was very good.

Thanks for the update. I have just bought a Leon 5dr hatch 184 FR and will be following your photos/posts above to install a Dash Cam. Cheers

Thought I'd better update this, still have the Leon, just had it's 3rd service and due it's first MOT in a month.

Currently has 25k miles on the clock, and the mpg has got even better. My daily commute, approx. 20 mins and 11 miles, it now easily achieves 50mpg.

Nothing has fell off it, so build quality very happy. I would buy another without an issue.
