Fabia 1.4 MPI Auto Cambelt Snap Help....!

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Sorry first post forum leech. My mate has a 1.4 8v skoda fabia auto 2001.

When driving down the M5 a few months ago the car juddered lost power and ended up being recovered with a suspected cambelt failure.

My question is rather than try and repair the unit would a low mileage lump from a standard manual car operate the same way as the auto. I presume all relevant ancillaries could be swapped over.

Thanks in advance

Who diagnosed it? These engines are chain driven not belt driven.

But yes the engine its self should be the same, just leave the box, ecu etc standard and replace the engine.

The autos are the 16v,not the 8v mpi aren't they?

Yes, they're the 75 BHP variant, either the AUA or the BBY, more commonly found in manual Polos than automatic Fabias.

my mistake it is indeed a 16v where are the engine codes on these or are they different enough aesthetically to know the difference?

Aesthetically the AUA has a single coil pack with individual HT leads to each sparkplug, the BBY has a coilpack for each sparkplug and no HT leads.

Engine code is on a sticker under the mat of the boot floor.

I believe the manual 1.4 used an 8 valve MPI engine which was based on an older 1.3 pre-VW takeover Skoda engine from the Favorit. The autos used a 16 valve unit from the VW range, so you may find there are more differences than you imagine.

Yes, both the engines I'm referring to are the same 1.4 16v 75BHP engine, AUA is single coilpack with HT leads and a cast alloy inlet manifold, BBY is coil on plug with a plastic inlet manifold, otherwise they are the same, the 100BHP variant which I have is the AUB, replaced by the BBZ, the difference is in the cam profiles, the compression and the mapping. These are all VW engines commonly found in the Polo, I had a brand new 75BHP manual Polo in 2000 with an AUA in it, this is the same engine found in automatic Fabias.
