More than likely a worn camshaft and lifters. Pretty common on the 1.9 tai but also a relatively easy fix.

Actually on the mk2 vrs they need physically wiring in as the wiring isn't present in the cars loom.

Yes, get it scanned for codes or just keep firing parts at it with the parts cannon.

Yes, change the canbus and get it coded. Why mess about with wiring, fuses etc when it's a known, documented procedure to fix the issue
