Engine light.

Car Fabia 1.4MPI Classic Estate 03 vintage

I have an intermittent issue with Engine Light. I have a Fault finder and it identifies the problem as P0441 EVAP Emission Control System Purge Flow Fault.

My friendly mechanic tells me to just ignore it.

So, I delete the Fault Code but then it comes on again a few weeks later. I cancel again and ...... get the picture ?

Checking the list of codes, there are 5 other similar faults 0442 to 0445 all identifying a Purge issue. I take it that the P0441 is a cover-all code for several "sins". The fact that is comes and goes seems to say that it is not an electrical fault and the carbon canister does not seem to have moving parts which does not leave much except the connecting pipes. I could just replace the parts but ?

Am I right to just ignore the warning light ? Car runs perfectly and starts on the button.

Any thoughts ? Cheers.

Purge valve problem, I'd've thought. Item 19 on this page.  Check the wiring to it looks OK before concluding it's the valve though.

Grab one with the same part number off ebay or a scrappie?

I would be inclined to check the hose connections to and from the valve as well.

Got the same code on mine when I checked the other day (first check of the new car), as well as a code indicating a fault with the post-cat lambda sensor - although I had no engine light on. Have cleared them and waiting to see if they come back. Seems like the car has much less lag when cold now that I've cleared them, could be coincidence though. As far as I can tell, if the valve is sticking you may get rough running when cold as you will have excess fuel from the EVAP expansion tank causing it to run overly rich.

I had a look around for the part, you can get replacement valves for £20+postage on-line, expect you may be able to get them from a parts dealer for similar price. Also, the part fits lots of other models - Seat etc. - so you should be able to pick up a pattern part. Think the code is 0 280 142 345
