I had one of those weird Maps & More moments this morning. Put the unit on its mount and it must have still been in "nav" mode as the map with blue route line was showing.

First strange thing I noticed was that the compass was showing (middle left of screen) even though I don't have it switched on in settings. Then saw unusual lay-out of zoom buttons: magnifying glass (-) on top left and magnifying glass (+) top right and below it magnifying glass (auto). These are not normally visible to me. Finally, found that by tapping the mag-glass(-) sign I could get a "permanent" zoomed out view - it even showed a numerical indication of the map scaling (eg. 0.4 miles, 1 mile, 5miles etc) just like "real" satnavs. This is exactly what I have always wanted but assumed was not available on our system (I like to see much more of the route ahead than the few hundred yards we normally get as max). Of course, as soon as I started fiddling in the settings to see what had changed the set-up reverted to "normal".

So, question: has anyone else ever found this option to zoom out permanently (not just the temporary version with grid lines that prevents the map moving)? If so how?. If not, then I assume the functionality is present and just needs to be activated by Garmin. They have previously acknowledged that the absence of the ability to "store" trips is a bug (on my machine at least) for which they offered me a swap, but I haven't bothered as they only supply reconditioned second-hand units under their pathetic warranty scheme. But if this proper "zoom" functionality were available for both "map" view and "nav" view then I will definitely upgrade.

The Nav usually does this where you are located somewhere "unknown" or the GPS can't pick up your location for example - a field or a unmarked car park, it's nothing out of the ordinary and perfectly normal, the nav will revert back to normal once it's found your known location

That's a shame - because this "fully-zoomable" mode would be so much better as a standard setting. It allowed me to "fix" the map size anywhere from the normal few hundred yards to tens of miles and zoom in and out at will which is much more useful than the default set-up which always reverts back to a zoomed in map. Clearly a more normal sat-nav configuration is embedded somewhere in the software, but for some reason has not been activated in our version of the Garmin OS - I can't think why!?
