catalyst problem?

Featured Replies

greetings to all again:

What are the symptoms of a plugged catalyst?

I read:

- Loss of power, especially uphill

- The car is heated more

- Difficult to start the car

- Strangers fumes in the exhaust pipe

Anyone have experience in this field?

I think my car has covered the catalyst because you've recently made a major repair in the butt, changing virtually all cooling system and so still has these symptoms

My car already has more than 145,000 km by what I read and would have to change the catalyst and also the previous owner did not give good maintenance

From what I've read there is no way to make it as clean factory as pollutant particles to adhere metal catalyst and change me is really expensive at this time. Do you know of any alternative solution?

Always thank you very much for taking the time to respond and help

Hey Ismael

More problems? Why don't you tell us what imptoms has your car instead of guessing? Tell us in detail if you measured anything. I have a bad feeling about the repair of the cylinder head. But maybe I'm wrong. So make a list of everything you think is not right.

PS

Google translator can produce funny / embarrassing results sometimes. For instance "a major repair in the butt" means "gran reparación en el culo" :D

if I have already realized that the translator is not entirely reliable :p

well I can tell you that it is well understood:

The mechanic who takes the car is a trusted mechanic and trust that made me a good job. The car won top speed in power, better sound etc.

Happens, the other day I traveled 500 km and one of 200 yesterday. The car behaves well but always notice the same. when grabs a slightly steep climb you die and I have to change to a lower gear in fact when it starts to die starts to play like a rattle, and if I take the air as heated above 90. The carriage also never reached 150 km hour as it should, I mean I've never made those speeds but I notice you do not have strength to reach those speeds.

In the morning made after white smoke when heated and is removed or so that's the story. Sometimes I disenchantment with the car but I hope gradually to put in conditions.

Tell you that you made no measurement because it was clear that the car had a problem with the cylinder head gasket then andthe cylinder head if you drive repair and ready.

I hope these help data. So I was thinking it could be the catalyst for all these symptoms and after the repair I did the car.

Reviewing the manual Ricardo me a question arises. This model has Catalyst? Maybe I should have started out there :D  :D  ... because when carburizing is that there are models that do not bring but as of 2000 and be imported if tiene.Que not you tell me you better know these models. if you want you take a picture of the underside of the car and it will be easier to identify it?

Yes, I've seen Felicia cars with carburetor and catalytic converter ('cat' for short, not the feline). I know that sounds odd, but there are such cars. They have 42kW (with cat) instead of 43kW (without cat). But nevertheless, I don't think the car has a plugged exhaust.

My experience tells me the cylinder head repair job was not a success. There is a leak between the cooling system and the combustion chamber. I understand your mechanic is honest, but you need also the right tools to do the job. The service manual is also mandatory for knowing what are maximum tolerances for straightness of head and block, the order of tightening the bolts, the torque values, etc.

You need to measure the compression of each cylinder.

If possible, do a cylinder leak down test like so:

Remove all spark plugs.

Bring piston 1 to Top Dead Center (TDC)

Insert compressed air (100 psi) through spark plug hole and look for bubbles in the coolant reservoir

Repeat the process for the rest of the cylinders.

Hello again

I went to wash the car and gave me lift the lid of the oil ... and I found?

tell me what you think Ricardo. I think the antifreeze continues to mix with the oil, right?

Bad repair? or is spitting water was inside. I doubt it will change as the new oil.

do not know if you can appreciate the tube that reaches the air filter came out white smoke, that's normal? and also because there I spit mixed with oil antifreeze

Sadly, my suspicions were true. The oil cap and the air filter photos are relevant. Coolant had mixed with oil and the emulsion went all the way into air filter housing through Positive Crank Ventilation hose.

A head gasket or a cylinder head repair job is all about PRECISION, A shop mechanic must have the tools to measure accurately several things. I marked the tools in blue and the measurements in red.

  • Both head and block surfaces must be straight within a 0.05 mm tollerance. It is mandatory to check the straightness with a straight metallic ruler and a feeler gauge in 10 positions (longitudinal, transversal, and diagonal). If not within specifications, the head must be machined.
  • You also need to check the protrusion of the liners (0.07 - 0.12 mm) with a feeler gauge or with a dial gauge.
  • Engine head bolts and nuts must be torqued in a specific order in 3 stages with a torque wrench. Stage 1: 20 Nm. Stage 2: 90 degrees. Stage 3: 90 degrees.
  • It is recommended to check the compression before starting the engine with a compression gauge. Pressure must be equal in all cylinders (10 - 14 bar) with a tollerance of maximum 3 bar.
  • If there are compression differences above 1 bar, you need to use a cylinder leak down tester to see where is the leak. It is accepted maximum 10% leak around piston rings.

As I said before, you can't do a head job properly without precision and measuring tools. A mechanic that repairs engines must have those tools and must respect the service manual. If not, the engine head gasket will not seal. You have the proof with your engine. You need a new head gasket, new oil, new antifreeze, and a better mechanic that has the right tools. You also need to clean the engine of emulsion inside.

Thank you so much Ricardo by the time you take to help

I have to talk to the mechanic to fix the problem in one way or another since I have already paid for the repair.

Thank you for all as detailed explanations.

I have to talk to the mechanic to fix the problem in one way or another since I have already paid for the repair.

Remember when I asked you about the guarantee for the job? 500 km is not acceptable.

Tell us if you need more help.

Ismael

One more important thing before cylinder head is bolted. Cylinder head bolts must be perfectly clean and very slightly oiled with engine oil. The holes must be perfectly clean and dry (use compressed air). Otherwise the cylinder had can crack when the bolts are torqued.

So cleanliness and attention to detail are vital.
