Drones

Featured Replies

Has anyone got any experience? I've never had one but quite fancy one with a camera.

I've seen parrot make a few which seem to be a better quality than the cheaper alternatives.

Anyone?

I hate the word 'Drone'. I assume that you mean multicopters.

I have many years of experience with them from when you hade to build them yourself. They are a lot better now but unfortunately the availabilty of fly out of the box models these days is giving the hobby a bad name. I would suggest that you look at this CAA video https://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?catid=1995&pageid=16842 that outlines where you can and cannot fly them. Last week a person was fined £1800 for flying where they shouldn't.

Having said that Radio Control planes and helicopters is a great hobby and when I am flying most people are very interested in what I am doing and I get very few negative comments. I do not have any experience of the Parrot but the Hubsan range is good quality and a good starting point for beginners.

Should be a law to shoot them down if they are over your property. Target practise with an air rifle.

Was at a conference last week and one of the speakers was rather excited about his drone hobby.

He reckoned you could build a very good one for about £300.

If you wanted the steroscopic headset that was another £300.

He talked about Maplin seling decent ones usually under the DJI brand.

Just becareful of the LiPo batteries. They seem rather..bomb-like

He was building one for mountain rescue with IR cameras which was all lightweight and foldable for a backpack. Reconed that was about £600.

Hmmm, 'cos the weather's always so great up in the mountains, isn't it..... :)

LiPo batteries, if handled, stored and charged correctly, are no more harmful than any other batteries. They should always be charged in a LiPo bag/sack so if anything untoward does happen it won't be catastrophic. Been using them for a long time in my RC car.

Hobbyking seem to do quite a range: http://hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__592__501__Multi_Rotors_Parts-RTF_PNF_ARF.html

I fly a Blade 350qx2, which can carry my go pro. Two of my friends have the DJI Phantom. The Phantom is better for aerial photography as it's much more stable than the qx2.

I also hate the term drone when applied to multi rotor model helis. Drones, like the Reaper, are what the raf and USAF use to kill people. The things I fly are essentially big boys toys.
