Seems I lost a little BHP

Bought a high milage Mk1 last week that is in very good condition, goes well and I am very pleased with it.

I thought I'd put it on the rollers and see what power it gives.

Sorry about the sideway piccy!

Second and third run were similar but dropped to 150ish BHP.

Tester thought that it was running a little lean so the ECU backed off. Maybe in need of a new AFR?

Any thoughts from you hardened experts?

Horses always escape. That's physics. I'd be happy with that on an old car myself but for some it just wont do. Only upgrades or TLC can entice those wild horses back into the field.

Speaking to a mechanic friend he stated that failed AFMs are fairly common on VAG cars?

If so, it's probably worth trying a new AFM.

I had my old vRS mapped by Angel Tuning about 5 years ago and the improvement was soooo noticeable, so worthwhile.

Once I solve this I will let them loose on this car.

171.6 on the graphs, expected for an older high mileage car, standard that is. Further drop to 150 and ecu retardation could be down to heat soak, depends on the circumstances. Hard to tell wwithout intake temps, maf and boost being logged but I don't think you've much to worry about if standard. A terraclean would reclaim some horses, mixed reports on the benefits but reclaimed bhp and mpg, and reduced emissions are the positives.

The important thing there is that the line is pretty smooth and not fluttery.

Had a chat with Bill at Badger 5 once and he used the phrase 'dyno lottery' in that on another set you could get different results. He would also suggest that if you're happy with the way it drives and there's no faults, whats the problem? Dyno runs are sometimes where madness lies, and they give you more questions than answers.

I agree with all the above about dynos.

Surrey rolling road is a known quantity and seems very realistic and reliable.

Like I said though if the vrs is standard I don't think there is much of an issue. The heat soak would get bad with multiple runs. The ecu retards timing from 36 degrees ( I think, around that anyway). With the standard smic in those conditions (cooling fan probably missed the key area as well, and without a vent in the arch liner?) those temps would probably be reached and could result in a significant loss.

I will get it mapped next week but I suppose logic dictates that if the first run was ok then all was well at the time.

If they were straight after I'd say heat soak was the issue. The smic isn't the biggest and on rollers they don't get real life airflow. Fitting a vent in the arch liner like a TT has does help, there's a thread for a how to on here somewhere. Try Google search octavia arch vent mod.

Where are you going for a remap? Prior to it they should do a health check anyway.

These 1.8t are all about the airflow, get that right and they are very good indeed. Happy mapping day

Yeah save your money for now. You could get a new gen one for peace of mind so you know where you're at with your new car, but without running issues I wouldn't worry too much.

When are your brakes mooing? Try some copper grease on the back of the pads, you can also install a handbrake return helper spring from an alahambra or sharan or some similar animal on the calipers. Again there is a thread on here about it. I fitted them on mine and they helped, especially in the dry, still got a little moo in the wet after releasing handbrake.

Ahh that will come in handy! Get him to grab you a pair of those caliper springs, sounds like your handbrake release needs a bit of help. They should be less than a tenner...not including trade discount ;)

You'll son learn that in order to save costs and for other strange reasons best known to vag, features and parts that turn up on golfs, s3 and tt and so on just don't figure on the octy vrs.
