Steering rack replacement

Featured Replies

I am about to replace my steering rack on my mk1 Octavia. The subframe is off and I just need to disconnect the ps lines.

Should I drain and dispose of the old fluid or try to clamp the hose?

If drain, will it drain fully by disconnecting the lines?

Also once drained, will it fill properly by gravity and by turning lock to lock a few times or are there any tricks to removing all the air?

Any other tips also gratefully received!

Cheers,

I would drain the PS fluid before removing the PS lines. Personally I'd avoid clamping them so there is no chance of damaging them.

A little bit of PS fluid will come out when you disconnect the line nothing major tho.

As for refilling I'm not sure if there is a correct procedure for the octavia. I've never had a problem with the cap off lock to lock method.

Cheers.

How hard can it be - less than a dozen bolts!

Agreed, just drain what you can and you will be fine. The lock to lock method seems to work well :)
