Gear linkage overhaul

Featured Replies

I've had a quick search but can't find any answers.

The gearchange on my 171,000 mile vRS isn't as tight as it could be.

I am fairly certain that this is down to general wear & tear in the linkage only. Direct movement of the gearbox selectors seems tight.

Is there a thread showing the overhauling of the linkage?

Are there any parts that are recommended to replace?

The mileage on the car is high but I can honestly say that it is only the gear linkage that feels like it has an element of wear. The remainder of the car seems as tight as a drum!

You could try and reset the linkages first, it's free...hit you tube and Google with 'linkage reset 1.8t' for a how to and examples.

At 171000 miles, you will probably find the linkage ends are about ready to self destruct anyway, as they use a tripod design that is trapped around the cable by a circular ring and spring.

What happens in reality most of the time is as you release the ring, one of the legs on the tripod break rendering accurate adjustment difficult to maintain as they slip on the cable due to the broken leg.

The ends are not very dear to renew, and are readily available from the dealers still, and are money well spent in my opinion.

Just make sure you don't have a lot of movement in the "tower  on the gearbox that the linkage goes down through, as there is a bush in there that seems to be failing on older vehicles now. There is also a plastic bush around the base of the gearlever that costs about £2 that is worth doing at the same time.

Thanks guys.

If the parts are reasonable, is there a list of parts that I should order?

What year is your Vrs?.

My selection is still sloppy after changing the adjusters on the cables on top of the box. Could mine be down to the bush inside the car? My car has done 145k

If you lift the lever gaiter, you can see where the play is in the bush if you have any, but sometimes the bush in the selector tower on top of the gearbox collapses and gives play.
