Octavia estate - front end knock- not drop links

Featured Replies

Hi,

our 2003/4 1.9pd 130 , has had a knock/rattle from the front end and as far as I can tell(hitting bumps with only one side of the car at a time) its the offside

I checked on saturday by getting Mrs ssray to push down on the front wings and I held the droplinks, I felt no movement

I did notice that the front offside outer cv boot has split a bit and leaked some grease out

I will replace the boot with a split kit, would grease being missing(not loads) allow the cv joint to knock?

If it is the cv joint is kaput, how hard is it to just replace the cv joint as it`s quite a bit cheaper than replacing the whole drive shaft

Check your roll bar bushes, lower arm bushes, ball joints and top mounts, all these are known to knock at some point, Does it knock in a straight line or when turning?.

CV Joint is replaceable separately from the main shaft, but roughly what mileage has the car covered, as the inner joint may be showing wear too, making it's economics of replacing just one joint questionable.

Hope it helps.

Phil.

Thanks phil,

It`s around 150k miles,it`s normally in the straight ahead postion,  the local car shop is having a look on thursday,

If you need a shaft, you may find that one of the guys breaking a vrs on here has a complete shaft for not a lot more than a decent CV joint price.

Edit  just seen yours is a PD, same plan, just a few less people on here breaking diesels

Local mot place had a look and stuck it on the shaking 4 post lift, the advice was turn the radio up.

It appears he can hear the noise, but it`s not one obvious component making it, he said nothing is worn enough to mess with the mot pass chances.

The main bits that are worn but not worn out are.

1, Front anti roll bar D bush

2, Front lower wishbone bush

3, Front shocks are tired but not leaking

4, Rear shocks the same

and poss top mount worn, but needs to be apart to see.

Not huge amounts, will have to do it over a weekend

Ah not too bad then

I guarantee it's the anti roll bar bushes. Replace them with poly bushes as the plastic sleeves will be knackered too therefore oem parts wont fit.

i got mine from awesome gti in cadishead by manchester/warrington. Cost 30 quid. Make sure you get anti roll bar D bushes and measure the width of the bar with an open end spanner or something. Mine was 19mm.

It'd be worth ringing ahead to make sure they have yours in stock.

Set the gps for the talk talk building at the end of seimens road (sounds like a bad plot for a porno)..
