premium loading for CAT D?

Featured Replies

My Octavia has been written off as a CAT D as it's uneconomical to repair (non fault claim). I have had an independent quote for the repair and can have it done within the write off value (reduced for me to keep car).

Before I accept the offer and buy the car back I need to be sure that I wont be paying a premium on the insurance in the future for the CAT D. I've asked my current insurer the question and all I've had back is a wonderful quote - "I'm not an expert but it shouldn't normally make a difference". Really helpful. I might send some antiseptic to them for the splinters in their arse where they're sitting on the fence.

Anyone got experience of whether this will load my insurance in the future?

They should not load your premium.

An Insurance Company selling a car or allowing it to be sold to be repaired and put on the road as a safe vehicle is back to being as before it was CAT D, there is no extra expense to them.

It is not a CAT D car after it is repaired.

Actually it would cost the Underwriter less, because if it was to be written off in the future they would say the market value is lower as an Ex CAT D vehicle.

Thanks for the reply.

My insurance company did say that it isn't a CAT D until the valuer decides it is, which would be after paying out. They also said it would devalue and future claims by 20%.

Still not sure how or where it being a CAT D is recorded and who does that.

It's recorded on the HPI register as CAT D and that is done by the insurer once they pay out. Cat D should not affect the insurance at all, but you will get less back if the car is written off or stolen in the future.

Small point to note, a car will be recorded on the VCAR database by the insurers. The database is then checked by HPI and other such companies when you pay for a vehicle check.

Hi,

Just to let you know that the vast majority of our insurance schemes have no issues with CAT D vehicles. These wouldn't incur any premium loading.

Regards,

Dan.
