Is backlash normal?

A certain amount of backlash is allowed during assembly of the transmission and is quite normal, however, as the vehicle ages, the process of on/off throttle increases this due to wear and tear and can become excessive.

I would check as has been said wheel to shaft movement, and also check to make sure all the inner shaft bolts are tight to the transmission. How hard do you have to move the wheel to produce the noise?, quite a lot and quite aggressively or not a lot and quite gently?. Are both wheels off the ground as you are moving the wheel?.

i dnt think its a massive amount of force i put on it to make it click, it was certainly a rocking motion, only had on wheel jacked up at the time, i dnt think the other side made the same noise,

I thought if you get noises like that at the wheel it'd be the bearings. When my driveshaft went it was clicking in 1st and 2nd gears as you engaged the clutch..

bearings is more of a groan i think this is a click / knock

The only way it could be bearings without sounding like a tram to exhibit that sort of noise is if you get somebody to rock the wheel with the car jacked up and safely supported on stands, get under and look at the mounting flange as you rock the wheel.

If there is any movement in the flange, then the bearing is starting to collapse, but to be honest, most bearings become unbearably annoyingly noisy before they fail - built in warning really.

As you only had one wheel in the air, it is probably backlash in the diff, there has to be a certain amount of backlash in the diff as standard, otherwise you would eventually strip the teeth during on and off power when driving.

Can you hear the noise in normal driving?, if not, if the amount of wheel rotation is quite small to get the noise, (about 1/16 of a wheel rotation), then I would be inclined to leave it and monitor it over a period of time to see if it gets any worse, as it could well be standard acceptable free movement. Are you the original owner from new or have you purchased it recently, as if you have owned it from new, only you know if this is a recent development.

I certainly would not panic at this stage.

Hope it helps,

Phil.
