Door/Wing Mirror Glass Vibrating

Featured Replies

Hi all,

OCTAVIA SCOUT 57 PLATE O/S ELECTRIC WING MIRROR GLASS

When driving this morning I noticed the driver side mirror glass vibrating alot and haven't noticed this before, the passenger side defintely isn't vibrating at all and on closer inspection the driver side mirror feels loose in the housing compared to the passenger side.

Is there a clip or something behind the mirror glass that could have snapped?  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Cheers

John

It's about to fall off, the glass that is. Common issue. If you carefully pry it at the edge it will pop off and you can then stick it securely back in place with double sided tape or the like.

Thanks for your reply, I was just going to buy a new glass for £10???  Seems there is only heated ones available, would mine be heated being a Scout, never noticed it clearing on misted days??

Might be heated, you'll find out for definite if you take the loose glass out. Heated mirrors usually work when the rear heated screen is switched on as far as I know.

Brill thank you, I will have a look tomorrow in the daylight to check if it is heated.

It should be heated on a Scout. I don't know how the heating works but there's no wire into the mirror glass. The work's Scout off side mirror came off and was glued back on and it still works fine. I had to stick my near side back on and the heating still works but it's a bit slower to react now.

Thats interesting that it still works after being stuck back on, maybe I will just stick mine for now and if it falls off then I will replace it, wont have lost anything apart from a bit of double sided tape and old mirror glass.

Take it off before driving the car or opening the door, in fact go out now and pull it off.

It it drops off it will likely smash.

Yes, the Scout gets heated mirrors as standard. This won't matter though.

All that has happened is the glue on the back of the glass has failed, the electrics and heating element are all contained in the plastic backing plate which doesn't need to be touched.

Carpet tape is all you need, a few strips on the back of the mirror and a firm push onto the backing plate. All done.

The heating will continue to work and will still be as effective as before, it is on my 2008 Scout and I did exactly as above.

Ok thanks, I will do it first thing, I have some really strong double sided tape.

I thought they worked when the mirror adjustment switch was moved to the 'heat' position?

It's a couple of years since I sold my Octavia, maybe I'm thinking of the Mondeo, or the Mini?!

Common fault, it's likely to be the glue/double sided tape giving out. If I was you I'd pull it off before it falls off and re-stick it securely, that's what I did last year when mine started vibrating.

Happen on my Passat last year pull it off and use some good quality glue to put it back on and add some tape while it dries, job done :)

Carpet/rug tape (it's a bit like heavy-duty, double-sided gaffer tape) always works for me.

It's happened on every Octavia I've owned - 3 & counting - & only ever happened once on each so hopefully that's as good a recommendation as I can give you.. :D

I would definitely echo the advice of others above & remove or temporarily tape it into place at your earliest opportunity though as it will fall off and it will smash - S*d's Law applies..
