Flushing engines

Featured Replies

Does anyone still do this or is it outdated with modern engines and synthetic oils?

Waiting to be served in GSF today and I saw a bottle of flushing oil on the shelf and begged the question i have just put to the Brisky massive.

I used to do it when running my frist cars on mineral oils and wondered if it was worth doing today, especially with the turbo assisted engines.

I personally use engine flush, it was invented for that reason. Does it make any odds who knows ? I am sure somebody will say its no good but hey oh.

Engine flushing isn't an every service thing, and I'd be very careful about how I ran a hydraulic tappet or a pompe duse engine with flushing oil.

Last time I changed the oil on my Fiesta, I bought some Halfords oil of the right spec and ran that for 20 mins before draining and refilling with the oil I wanted to use. It seemed to help as this new oil hasn't gone black yet, whereas previously the oil would go black quite quickly.

If the engine has done a good distance and you think it may have some sludge biuld up then flush.  Synthetic oils are much better than old oils but if not changed regularly they still degrade.

Best thing to do is very regular oil changes though probably, keep the oil and engine good from the start.

If you want to give your motor a bit of loving care I would recommend just replacing the oil with a cheap correctly specced oil without replacing the filter then running it for a couple of days. Oil and filter change with the good stuff and jobs a good one.

Well i know which is the cheapest, and quickest. i used to do my vrs twice a year doing less than 5000 mls. When sump was dropped oil pick up was spotless.
