Changing front side light bulbs.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm trying to change the bulb in the front head light unit and I'm having difficulty getting the bulb holder out.

Is there any special way of getting it out or is there a special tool required?  There's not much room to get your hand in.

If anyone knows or can help I'd be grateful

Do you have the black headlights?

If I remember rite you turn them either left or right then they should pull out?

On our 58 plate, on both sides I had to just pull on the wires with a massive amount of force - its a horrendous design with plastic in plastic - with the force required I was expecting to pull the wires out of the bulb holder. Not sure if there is a lubricant that could be added when re-fitting that would not be effected by the heat generated in the headlights.

Wow. Careful pulling the wires!

Had this discussion before... Some have easy removal some don't. I got a set of trim removal picks, a little like bent screwdrivers and they help "Grip" the plastic to pull it out safely. I found them on ebay for a few quid a set of four differing shapes and used the one with the sharpest angle, I think!

Take care not to damage the wiring as they are quite sharp at the pointy-end!

Once removed, the bulb holders seem a little easier to re-remove again, although this might not be the case a year or two down the line. I removed mine to try led bulbs but put the standard ones back as the less were too blue!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the help.

The bulb holder is behind the rubber cap (which is fun and games itself if you drop it down between the wing and the liner!) and there is a short "tube" that it fits in. It's difficult to get my fingers inside the tube to turn the holder.  It's easier on the passenger side than on the drivers side but the holder still wont come out.

Do you have to twist the holder like a bayonet bulb to get it out or is it just a straight push in fit?

I did try yanking on the wiring, but I chickened out 'cos I don't want to make things worse!

I might try the trim removal picks as suggested.  You can't have enough tools can you?

For the main bulbs which are as you say sat behind a large rubber cap, it is an anti-clockwise twist, looking onto the bulb from the engine compartment. If you look, you will see a plastic plug with the wires onto a metallic bulb holder that has 2 tangs sat in retainers on the headlight at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. I managed to use both hands onto the holder to get enough force to turn it.
