1.8t Big Turbo question(s)

Featured Replies

Hi Guys!

If any of you are knowledgeable when it comes to tuning please chime in...

I'm going big turbo on my 4X4. It'll be a T3/T4 50 trim, all hardware is covered. However, it will bankrupt me and I won't have enough money for tuning immediately.

Of course I could wait until I have the money to cover everything and do it properly, but I'm impatient. So I want it to run on my stage 1 software if possible until I can afford to put it on a rolling road.

I could just install the hardware, leave my standard injectors and MAF in place and run at very low boost and everything would probably be fine, albeit imperfect. However that's boring...I want to run the bigger injectors and make some use of that bigger turbo straight away (hear me out)...

So I understand that air/fuel ratios must be maintained and I can't simply whack in bigger injectors and expect things to run correctly. However it's also my understanding that if the area of the MAF housing is increased proportionately with the increased flow of the injectors then the air/fuel ratios will remain intact.

The problem is (and I don't fully understand why) that although air and fuel ratios will be ok, doing this will cause timing to advance somewhat...and as timing will already be a little advanced due to the current tune I'll be running the risk of detonation.

So I was thinking I can just use lemmiwinks to bring the timing back to acceptable parameters?

My question is...does this all make sense? Will it work, at least well enough to run it for a month or two while I save for a rolling road tune? Has anyone done anything similar? Am I an idiot?!

Don't beat on me too hard, thank you in advance :)
