Osram SilverStars

Featured Replies

It's that of year, where my headlights are on every trip I take now.

The 6000K upgrade for my Xenons work beautifully & I hardly ever use my main beam. However, I always want the best thing available to do a certain job, & now wanting to upgrade the main beam bulbs.

In the past, I've upgraded to higher wattage bulbs with substantial wiring & fuses. This time, I feel that higher wattage bulbs won't be neccessary & the fact that they will melt my LED sidelights!!;)

After perusing various websites, I've come to the conclusion that these Osram Silverstars may well find themselves on my car.

Just wanting to know if anybody has used or still use the afore mentioned articles.

Just ordered a set of H7's for £16.49 delivered off Ebay. Will post a review once I get them in and give them a go.

£16.49 is a pretty good price.

Cheapest I can find them is £21.49 for a pair at the moment.

Run these on my last two cars and just installed a set on the Mondy :D Only ever used them as dipped beam bulbs though so can't comment on their main beam performance ... I've got my Philips Rallye's for main beam :D

I think they're great and it's amazing the difference in the sweep of the light and also the range compared to the standard bulbs. The other advantage of them is that in the 40+ k miles of the Scooby and 30+ k miles in the Fabia, I never needed to change one! :D

Got mine from Powerbulbs and a quick search on Google will turn up a 10% discount voucher code ;)

Chris

Have been using them for a couple of years and I think they are brill on dip and main beam :D I have recently got a pair for a mate and he rates them also.

Try GSF car parts

I bought a pair week ago for arround £15. They are great, definitely worth the money.

Got them on mine too - the standard main beam on the Fabia with Xenons seems pretty decent, but the uprated bulbs do an even better job. Complete pain to fit but then as you've changed the xenons yourself, I'm sure you'll get that one in too

Silverstars are great, I had them on the OCty last year, if you have Xenons though not sure it's worth the bother ?

alright jon

ive just fitted these on my car yesterday and they seem a lot better than wot was on

carlos

got a set on my vRS and cant rate them enough, powerbulbs supplied them, cant remember the price but they were next day delivery...

i ordered replacement bulbs for the indicators as well and they threw in a set of philips blue vision side lights for free.

Even with Xenons the difference on high beam is pretty amazing. If you haven't got Xenons I'd definitely spend that money on a few uprated bulbs, it will make a BIG difference to passive safety at a relatively low expense, and as mentioned, free side lights too :)

Hi

Are the H7 Silver Stars used as dipped beams noticably better than the standard bulbs?

Also, what H3s are available in Xenon with clear jacket? (Really dont like coloured bulbs, cannot see the point of filtering light out).

Chris

Let you know by the weekend. Mine are due in the post tomorrow and will be in tomorrow night weather permitting.

Yep, significantly better :D

Chris

I'm also considering abulb upgrade - the dipped headlights on the Octavia are appauling compared to my MK4 Astra, they're more the level of an old Corsa/Nova.

Just got some H7's from a local motorsport shop. So hopefully will have them in by the weekend.

Yes.

I fitted some Silverstars after a week of owning the car. I had Philips Vision Plus in my previous VW Bora, and the standard Fabia lights were terrible in comparison. Silverstars sorted them out.

The Philips Vision Plus are as good as the Osrams.

I'm tempted by some Rallye 100W for the main beams now. Is the standard wiring OK for these?

Yes.

Let me think. 8.3A insread of 4.8 A. I would doubt it. Wouldn't take the chance. Best thing to do is to use the existing wiring to switch a relay under the button with heavy cable through a fuse direct to the battery powering the headlights. You may need uprated lamp holders too.

Yep, absolutely fine

The headlamp wiring on my car wouldn't take that current. It's only about 1mm2 which would take 8 amps ok only you have to take into account the heating effect in the wiring loom. Good luck but I wouldn't do it.

Just put my Silverstars in. Didn't look any different just looking at them but what a difference when on the road. I have to say i'm very impressed. They aren't a whole lot brighter as such, they just light up more of the road ahead and the light is a higher temperature (more white).

They take a bit of getting used to though. In order to throw the light further, the beam sits higher. This means you see more of the edge of the road and obviously the beam moves with the car. I never realised how much the car moves about on the suspension but you can see it in the beam.

My previous mod of changing the sidelight lamps to the laser blue ones which appear to be more white and then match the headlights however is now redundant because the Osrams are whiter still. Ah well.

I ran them on my Fabia for 15k miles without issue and only did it because of the good feedback from Jason and Andy Ellis. Out of interest, how long would they need to be running for a significant amount of heat to build up in the wiring loom? :D

Depends on the loom Chris but there is no way of telling without giving it a go. Friend of a friend bought some from an autopart store a couple of months back. They said they would be safe enough in his Mk 3 Golf but they smoked part of the loom. It was a mess and he's lucky the whole car didn't go up. The store is now footing the
