                            Just got my new skoda yeti, but not sure to buy winter tyres and steel rims for winter . i drive long way work and on roads not gritted so dont wanna get stuck also if fitting 16 rims for winter better ? as i got 225.50.17 on car now cheers chris

FWIW Skoda Switzerland suggest 16" rims for winter tires for optimal driving conditions. Mine are mounted on Forrester rims.

Yetis fitted with 16s as standard come on 215/60/16 (apart from Greenlines that come on 205/55/16).  I'd stick with 215/60/16 to keep the rolling diameter close to your 225/50/17s.
