Automatic wipers

Featured Replies

My wipers are driving me mad. I prefer to leave them on 'auto' where they are normally very reliable but all that has changed with the colder weather.

I'm not keen on using de-icer except in an emergency as it is potentially detremental to the paint work. I prefer to use luke warm water to defrost my windows. Unfortunately it often freezes again in seconds so I get my wipers going to prevent that. But I don't have a alternate wipe, just the auto setting and sensitivity so I end up covered in water when I defrost again.

What really annoys me is that everyday i've left work this week the windscreen has had condensation on the outside. If I use the manual wipe and the switch back to auto, the wipers just keep on going. I have to stop and wipe the windsreen in the area of the sensor to stop it.

Anyone else had these problems?

Yes - I agree. Also the extra wipe after a couple of seconds from the screen wash just smears the windscreen with the salt that has arrived!

All covered in a previous thread when the weather was like this earlier this year. I'd forgotten just how annoying that extra wipe is until this morning

I HATE IT!!:finger:

Damn things are rubbish

Wipe a dry screen and dont go sometimes when wet.

Speed sensitive too so stop when car car slows down or queing in traffic.

Ive asked a couple of dealers if they can be turned off but apparently they cant. Dealers confirm a lot of complaints about them.

Im thinking of writing to Skoda about it as I think they are potentially dangerous.

Real shame as the rest of the car is great.

90% of the time they work great and I can get around the problem of the windscreen refreezing after i defost it (because the wipers don't turn on) but it's when they go crazy after I clear a nearly frozed screen that it annoys me.

If it's any concellation, my boss is having similar problems with his new A6.

Bit like I said some time ago - some of the electronics are getting too clever by half! It wouldn't be rocket science to have designed an on/off switch for the wiper function.

Far better [seen on lot of US rental cars] is a speed control for the intermittent wipe setting, instead of 3 or 4 positions, usually a rotary dial on the end of the stalk.

The wipers can be turned off, the position below Automatic is off. The position below that, a spring return, is single wipe. When the auto can't handle the conditions I revert to manaul control.

Presumably the identical system.

No, I meant a switch that turns off the rain sensor, leaving the intermittant timing as set by the driver.

That is a good idea.

Mechanic, sorry technician, at one dealer told me that the reason Skoda say they cant turn it off is because the same sensor is used for "automatic tunnel lights"

Seems that in some markets in Europe this turns the lights on/off automatically for tunnels as required by law.

I agree though, a switch must be technically possible. Perhaps Skoda will rethink if enough people complain.

I don't think it's actually the same sensor but a different sensor in the same housing sharing the same wiring
