Dipstick question

Featured Replies

I not wanting to create a massive oil discussion but on a cold dip what do people top there oil up to because just if you filled it on dipstick when oil warm goes thinner so do people fill up to 3/4 for expansion?

Put 1 litre of engine oil in a pan at 10*oC, look at the level then, (even try just with 1 litre of Cooking Oil)

and then heat it to 95*oC,  see what difference the level is,   near nothing.

Cold Oil in the engine in the sump with 3.6 litres in might be at the top of the Cross Hatch or above,

Area A.

After maybe 10 miles driving, or at the end of a journey, do a hot check, (Fabia Owners manual says 'warm'  VW Polo Owners manual says operating temperature)

all oil is not back in the Sump, and it might be at the Area A it should be at according to Skoda / VW.

Cross hatch Area with a Hot Check is OK with most,.

a cold dip might be on the Smooth area above,

and if you are below the Crossh hatch Hot or worse when cold, you are over 1 litre below the oil capacity of

the engine.

you might be 2 litres low and still not get a Warning Light or Message of Low OIl or low Oil Pressure.
