Vrs front knocking over rough ground

Featured Replies

I have a problem with knocking/clunking sound from the front drivers side when going over rough ground, it also made a horrible crunching noise when turning from full lock one way to full lock the other a couple of months back. For a long time the car has felt like there is some sort of resistance when driving (almost like brakes still on a bit), its not brake related as had them all checked, last week the resistance seemed to disappear and the steering went very very light (for about a week) now it is back to heavy steering and car working harder to move. A bit of vibration at 70-80 mph aswell. I have had a couple of people look at the car and they couldn't see anything and it passed its mot 6 weeks ago, is it likely to be these things all come from the same problem? I am going to book it into another garage next week

Knocking and clunking sounds like worn bushes or joints on the suspension, wear and tear parts and usually easily identifiable with a pry bar when the car is up on ramps.

The crunching noise going from lock to lock sounds a little worrying though. The steering racks on the Octavia have been known to wear prematurely from time to time as reported on here, but then this is normally quickly picked up during an MOT.

The steering going heavy and then light could also point to the steering rack. I think the power steering on the Octavia is electric. Faults with the power steering almost always result in the red stering wheel symbol on the dash though.

Vibration would suggest an alloy wheel out of balance.

Cheers will get it checked over again over the next couple of days and hopefully get to the bottom of it, tbh I don't mind too much if it costs a few quid to get sorted, would be worth it just to get the car driving like it should

I'd be thinking the bearings in the strut top mounts have failed
