ASR Light and Function

Featured Replies

i just got myself a Mk1 vRS and have noticed that my ASR button doesnt seem to do anything, if i put my foot down i can feel it kicking in so it obviously works, however i dont seem to see the light flashing and pretty sure the button doesnt work for switching it off as i dont get the light to say that its not activated.

i've done a search but can only find issues with peoples lights coming on but not the opposite.

anyone experienced this or have an idea of what i need to look for about why i cant turn it off? its maybe not a major issue but its certainly annoying when i'd rather be able to turn it off when i liked as it seems to make the car bog down when i dont want it to.

going to have to get some time to go through the car and check fuses and see if somethings gone but i doubt this is a fuse issue. seems a strange issue to me as i've only ever experienced the ASR not working if there was an ABS sensor fault on previous Skoda's i've owned.

Your last 2 paragraphs have pretty much got it for your next checks, but just to double check, you have no yellow symbol of a triangle with an exclamation mark in the speedo at all when you switch the asr system off?

You would be wise to get a scan done after checking the fuse basics - don't forget the ones in the battery box - as you may have a fault in one of the wheel sensors. If you have a kind friend who would let you borrow their switch to try, that would be useful for you. Does the ABS cut in if you brake hard at all?.

The fact that it is bogging suggests the system is working, so it may be a simple fix. Nobody has had the facia out to fit an aftermarket head unit and not put the connector back on the switch properly have they?.

i dont appear to have the light at all, if i put the foot down in first, you can feel the wheels try to spin and at this point i'd expect the light to start flashing and although you can feel the ASR kicking in and killing the power, the light is nowhere to be seen.

the button appears to be doing nothing although i havent simply tried to just press it once and see if the wheels spin.

it does have an aftermarket stereo so i'll check to see if the switch has been unplugged for any reason. and i would have thought if there was a wheel sensor issue the light would be on all the time and ASR would cease to function, i could understand if someone had pulled the light out to hide a problem (if possible) but not if the system is working.

as i said, its a strange issue. hoping someone here has experienced similar.

edit: haven't tested the ABS either, shall see if that works.

Could it be a popped bulb in the binacle?.

As far as I remember they are smd led's I believe.

I was looking at the vrs wiring diagram last night, and I must admit I am leaning further toward a faulty switch than I was last night.

i'm wondering if i should just buy a switch off ebay and see if that solves the issue.

I will look in my box of bits to see if I have one, if I have, you can have it for cost of posting. Will let you know in morning.

Just to double check, it is definitely ASR you have and not ESP?.

thanks, i've already ordered one though. was less than a tenner so if it works, great, if not then its not the end of the world.

No problem, hope it works for you, If Oet was still active on here, he is your man for bits, he has 3 Vrs's in bits in his shed, Devonutopia is good for spare bits on here too

Ok:-

  1. When the ASR fires, if you're really fast off the throttle you can catch it before the fascia light even flashes.
  2. If you don't do this, the light flashes a few times after the power cuts back.
  3. When the ASR is firing, or in an error condition, the fascia light comes on but the switch one doesn't.

Any help?

Hi Ken,

the light doesn't come on at all, even when the ASR kicks in and i dont back off the throttle.

new switch arrived today, easy to replace but its not made any difference, the light isn't coming on on the dash so i guess that rules out faulty switch,

not sure what else could be the problem, think i'll get Skoda to plug it in and see if it flags up any faults or if they can help me.

Are all the fuses definitely ok?, I seem to recall one of the battery box fuses covers this system too, could be worth a look. Just a quick question, does the lamp self test for a few seconds when you switch the ignition on then go out, or is there nothing at all?.

i've not seen the light come on at all, i'm not sure if its meant to come on when you switch the ignition on, a friend who has a golf has checked on her's and her light doesnt come on initially but does when it either breaks traction or the button is pressed.

i'll need to check the fusebox in the engine bay, i have only checked the dashboard one and the fuse is fine there.

Just been outside to double check, my 03 Vrs self tests the entire dash lights (including traction control) when you turn the key to the ignition position for about 2 seconds, then only the essential lamps stay lit (charge warning, oil pressure, handbrake etc) and the rest go out.

This may be part of the problem then, check your fuses first and check the battery fuse box for any signs of melting around the bolted fuse connectors. After that, you really need to do a scan to see what is what before going further.

Edit : just had a thought, someone hasn't put tape over the lamp to prevent it showing at all have they?, as there may be a fault keeping the lamp on.

i cant see any tape, dash looks normal in that respect.

seems the light is the issue, i done some tests earlier by switching on, pressing button, foot down, could get it wheelspinning, stopped, pressed button again, foot down, asr kicks in.

so the button and asr appears to actually work just the lack of light showing.

pic of my clocks when i initially turn the key and lights that come on.

Scan time I think - if all clear, you may be looking at a dash panel repair by an electronics specialist.
