Blue Vision v Silver Star

Featured Replies

one of my headlight bulbs has gone so i need to buy some more. As they come in pairs i am torn between getting the Philips Blue Vision like i have now or going for the Osram Silver star ones.

Also what would people reccomend as an upgrade for the fog light bulbs?

Cheers

I hate to keep harping back to the Autoexpress bulb review but it seemed pretty exhaustive. They recommended the Philips Blue Vision if you use H4 lamps and The Osram Silverstars if you use H7.

I put Silverstars into my OctyII earlier today and they are a great job. Well impressed.

Oh yeah, I wouldn't bother upgrading the fog lamp bulbs. I mean how often do you use them anyway.

Out of interest, how long did the BlueVision last you before one of them blew?

i have had them in my Octy since i got it a year ago and i had them in my Focus before that for a couple of years.

I am sure i saw the Osram Silver Stars in H4 fitting though

The Osrams are available in H4 and H7 but the Philips were the best in the H4 fitting and the Osram best in the H7 fitting.

I'd just check www.powerbulbs.com - pretty comprehensive for the offerings from Philips and Osram.

Think Johnny was just referring to the AutoExpress test, that BlueVision came out better when used in H4 fitting?

Steve

Looks like Blue Vision again then.

Just one thing , what is the difference between the Blue Vision Plus, that i have had for a while and the Blue Vision Ultra that are on the PowerBulbs site nowadays?

also has anyone heard of these? if so what are they like?

It's the Philips Vision Plus 50% light which are recommended on Powerbulbs. They just say the Blue Vision's are the best blue bulb you can buy. I'd always go with more light (Vision Plus or Silverstars) over blue effect any day :D

They are more blue. This means they are whiter and closer to xenon but the extra tinge loses light output so these give less than 30% more light on the road while the blue vision plus gives up to 50% more light on the road albeit in a slightly warmer colour temperature.

Any tips on fitting them? Got a full set of Silverstars still sat in their blister packs.Owners manuel says 'dealer job'. Yeah, right. It is a tight job though. Got Octy 2.0TDi. Not much room.Need hands the size of Jimmy Krankie to get in there!

Instructions are in the owner's manual

For example (removing nearside headlight)

Open bonnet and look down

You will see a white plastic wing nut thing on a black threaded screw coming through the engine front member from the back of the top of the headlight unit.

Remove it

There is a locking lever at the bottom of the headlight on the left. Push down on the plastic tab and pull the lever straight out (away from the headlight). It might need a bit of a tug.

Then just carefully withdraw the headlight using light pressure from behind.

Then reach behind the headlamp, pull out the little locking tab at the bottom of the wiring connector and remove the connector. This is a bit awkward as you are doing it by feel but you will get it eventually.

Offside is exactly the same except there is enough slack in the wiring loom to allow you to change bulbs without disconnecting the wiring connector.

Thanks Johnny!...(again!)

Well im not sure about you city folk :p

But out here in the countryside, i would get use out of fog lights 4 days a week at least over the winter.

Would use the fog lights more than i'd use condoms :p

I'm not going to say it

also has anyone heard of these? if so what are they like?

seem more expensive but not heard any reports on them

Would use the fog lights more than i'd use condoms :p

lucky you dont live in town then isn't it!

Would use the fog lights more than i'd use condoms :p

How's your love life?:P

Well its not too good atm, but single is cheaper.

Any girls out there looking for a single, 19yrsold shortly to become black Fabia vRS owner?
