Potential new VRS buyer

It's a loooong time since I have been on here (well ok about 3 years). I sold my MK1 Furby Vrs back at the tail end of 2012 and to be fair I have regretted doing so. I have since owned a Hyundai Coupe 2.0 (huge mistake that led to garage taking it back….long story) and am currently driving a 2011 plate Ford Focus Zetec in 1.8 petrol guise.

 

So to cut to the point I am getting cravings for another fast, quirky euro hatch and the new MK2 Fabia Vrs is stirring my loins. So basically I'm just putting the feelers out and asking peoples thoughts on them in general. I understand that as this is a Skoda forum I am likely to get positive reviews of them but I am also asking what things I should look out for as a potential buyer. I have briefly read about oil consumption issues-is there anything I can check before buying to help avoid this? Also are there any desirable extras which I can look out for (cruise control, heated seats etc).

 

A more general question is how do they drive? Do people like the DSG box? What is the power delivery like? Obviously I was used to the surge of torque from my PD130 block (remapped to 165) so how does the supercharged, turbocharged TSI affair deliver?

Hi, I had a mark I , I have had 2 mark II's now, and covered over 100k between the 2....

 

its a problem if you get an oil burner, but most are fine, best advice I can give (and you will get more) is to try and contact the previous owner!

 

post 2013 (CTHE) cars are best , circa 195 bhp and loads of engine tweaks to fix oil issues.

 

you will not miss the torque, the supercharge gives massive torque at about 1,000 revs! lol.... even the PD couldnt do that ;) RR graphs show the torque peaks at the start and tails off.... power delivery is awesome, no flat spots, screams to 7k !

 

I love the DSG... but its a bit like marmite..... take some time to learn to drive it properly, dont just get in and compare to a manual....

In my opinon...

1) generally simply put it in "D" .... after a while you can learn to use the exact pressure and speed of movement on throttle to get the response desired... no change down, one gear changedown, kickdown etc , becomes intuitive....

2) i would avoid "sport" , cant see the point myself..

3) when wanting to "press on" drive in manual... use the paddles.... there is nothing like blipping down as you are braking into a corner, then flicking up through the gears on the way up, blipping down for the next corner ect .... ... including things like a few blips down before a lorry overtake..... I track mine a fair bit, and I love using the paddles driving fast! gives you the control you had with the manual.... learn where the kickdown switch is on the throttle, and learn to avoid it to keep proper controll... (have traction control OFF so the XDS diff can work properly....)

 

you can set up the diff, brakes and steering with a laptop to get the feel you like

 

I love my mark II best car I've owned...

 

mod it like the mark I ... I have H&R front and rear anti roll bars, polybushed at the front for extra stiffness.... eibachs, better brakes ect ....

 

most of all enjoy :) its a very different animal to the mark I , but a great value fast hatch :)
