My Superb has been sitting at the dealers now for a week awaiting form v788 being returned from dvla with my old retained number, has anyone experience of how long this takes from the info being sent to Swansea?

Yes, I did mine on Monday online.. Paid £80 to put it onto retention and its instant with the retention ref to then put the original plate back on the car.

The new V5 arrived yesterday (Wednesday)

To put the plate onto a new car - https://www.gov.uk/put-registration-number-vehicle

You can use this service if your vehicle is: registered with DVLA

I understand this process is instant also.

If done via post, DVLA quoted me upto 6 weeks when i called them on Friday afternoon, they have scaled back the people element as they encourage it all done online now as its automated process.

Of course.. this may be different if the car is not registered, but i would suggest letting the dealer do their thing putting a default plate on the car, then once the car is in the owners hands, them doing the plate transfer to save time

I took the plate off my car last Saturday, got the V5 and retention certificate by Wednesday

Was that via post or online ?

Submitted online, got the docs back in the post

I take it the online function is fairly recent? I notice it's shown as Beta.

I did my retention end of August well in advance of an expected September/November vehicle delivery, wary of the "may take up to six weeks".

I printed out a PDF that was sent with my old V5 and cheque to DVLA. It was posted on a Saturday and the new V5 and retention document arrived on the Friday. So by post it took 5 working days.

I used the online service a few months ago and it was instant. The new v5 came through less than 36 hours later.

Used the online service, placed on retention at 13:00 hrs on Wednesday and was instantly advised of the replacement registration (Vehicle had been registered straight on the personal plate), the V5C arrived in the post on Friday and the retention document arrived on the Saturday.

This and renewing vehicle tax on-line are excellent examples of computerization that really works!

Well done to the DVLA :)

Good to hear it's that easy I have brought my first personalised plate for my new superb.
