Alloy Wheel Rim Protectors

Featured Replies

Just kerbed one 17 inch alloy wheel rim which I have managed to touch up with some alloy wheel paint. It has done a pretty good job and it is hard to see unless you actually go looking for the damage. However these 17 inch wheels with rubber band tyres are obviously prone to kerbing despite the fact that the tyres fitted have some rim protection function incorporated.I am considering having a rim protection system fitted to the wheels (Alloygator,Rim Ringz etc).Does anyone have experience  or recommendations, please?

I'm yet to hear a good report about these protectors sadly.

I had AlloyGators fitted to a previous car - I had my tyres changed and the garage did them at the same time but on the way home one flew out on t'motorway! Was a waste of time and doesn't look as good as on the pictures. This was a few years ago mind so maybe things have changed.

Thanks for the info whoop_whoop.I believe that Alloygators have been improved and got 4 out of 5 stars from What Car in a review. They seem a little fiddly to do yourself as you have to glue in little stainless steel inserts , cut the plastic to fit the wheel size and deflate and inflate the tyre..I agree that they diminish the good looks of the wheels but not as much as kerbing damage.I have also come across Rim Ringz which are all plastic and come in the exact size to fit the wheels.Anyone any experience of these?I have also been quoted £40 to £60 by local tyre shops to fit.Is this reasonable?

Decided to take the plunge and have Alloy wheel rim protectors fitted (before and after pictures above). They are Alloygators in silver to match the wheel colour. They are made of hard nylon and fitted between tyre and wheel.Since they are the same colour they make the wheel seem slightly bigger and the tyre slightly smaller. They were fitted in an hour for £95 although you can fit them yourself for £60 and they seem substantial..

Look ok. I couldn't see the difference at first.

I hope that is the beauty of them that they are inconspicous but protect the wheels in everyday minor collisions with the kerb. They are available in nine colours to match the wheel or body colour or provide a contrast. You get a little tool with them to remove any burrs post collision and if you manage to wreck them the shop will replace on an individual wheel for £30.I am just regularly checking the tyre pressures at the moment to prove that there is no detriment there.

Robbydazzler - the AlloyGators you have fitted to your wheels/tyres are a very good match to the shade of silver of the wheels.  As Stormchaser said, I had to look at the second photo for a few seconds to even spot that the AlloyGators had been fitted.

Fate is very strange!!!!!As soon as I had the Alloygators fitted I managed to have a very heavy collision with a kerb which was due to my incompetence. This was so heavy that it took a chunk of rubber out of the tyre wall which meant I had to purchase a new tyre (£98!!!!!).Some of the Alloygator had come away from the rim but it had done it's job and there was bare minimum damage to the rim  and this was covered by a new Alloygator fitted for £30.I can now confidently say that Alloygators do what they claim and protect Alloys from minor kerbing damage and seemingly still function well when the impact is more serious.
