Cold start

Featured Replies

Not had my vRS mk1 long, today was the first cold morning i have started it up on, 4'c in the morning....She hated it! Tried to pull away but she was having none of it till there was some heat in the engine. Never had a car do this to me before.

Also I have noticed a noise from behind the dash, around the glove compartment area...sounds like a small motor/actuaor moving.....

And....sometimes when I start her up I can hear a whistle noise, the Missus heard it from inside the house and said it sounded more like a screech. As said it only does it sometimes.....once, twice a week.

Any ideas?

Its the secondary air pump running to help warm the cat up quicker,

They run like crap when this is running or mine used to until i took it off,

The screetching could be the pump bearings going or the unit falling to bits (google it quiet common)

As above they're horrible things. I never used to pull away until mine had cut out, the only problem I had with mine mind was when a hose came loose, it sounded like a lawnmower. I never got round to deleting mine but always intended to even though it was ok to avoid having to deal with a failure.

It does sound like you have a problem here, are there any fault codes?  Mines ok when cold, no issues.

Thanks for the replies!

Will check the secondary air pump set up.

Liverpool-lad, no, there are no visual warnings on the dash so I assume no fault codes.

There may still be a code thrown, although faults with sai are often airflow related so would usually put the EML on. It does sound like it has internal pump issues above all else given the noises. Check it out and let us know how you get on.
