Running car out of fuel

Featured Replies

Hi, being an idiot I ran my octy out of diesel this morning.

Whacked in 5 L from a can and cranked it over like 6-7 times before it finally fired up.

Anything I really should check after doing this?

Such driving might affect fuel pump. I don't know how do you check that and how does car behave if something's wrong but probably some smart people will explain.

Yeah maybe. I don't know if car shuts down things when a certain part of fuel system goes dry? Certainly took a while for fuel system to prime and fire the beast up.

Just hope I haven't buggered anything.

Btw is there an electric fuel pump or is it purely the tandem pump that does the fuel?

There is an electric lift pump in the tank.

I doubt you will have damaged it. You only run the risk of damaging the electric pump if running for a long time without diesel but if it conked out then the next time it ran was when you filled up again then it'll be fine.

It will be fine. Sometimes take a few more turn overs before it will start. As you described really!
