Steering rack - quick one available?

Featured Replies

So... turns out that my steering rack is worn and needs replacing.

If possible I'd rather a quick rack which would make the car far better to drive.

Does anyone know if there is one available? I'm not hopeful but thought I would ask...

Thanks :)

I've never heard of one.  You are limited to 9N polo and Ibiza 6L and I don't believe any of those were fitted with a better rack.  makes you wonder, but I bet with some engineering skills there could be a bigger wheel put on the end of the steering column so 1 turn of the wheel makes more turns of the rack, but I bet this would throw out all kinds of problems with the angle sensor.

There isn't that I know of. One of my mates was looking into getting quaife some made up if there was the interest. I'll see if anything ever happened with it

Yeah Jason, that's pretty much what I thought would be the case :(  The car would benefit from one so much - especially with track work.

I agree that you could put a bigger cog on the end of the column, but it would probably require the column re-positioning to accommodate it surely?...

If you could Charlie that would be awesome thanks

Cheers Kev, spot on.

Would be interesting to see how much it would cost to get one custom made.

Get a second hand rack and get it sent off...

A lot of money I'd fear though!

Worth it though, mate of mine hand built his escort quick rack using gears at column

Ok so it is possible,

They said it was possible but needed a template one first of all, but would be harder work for those who wanted to use everyday transport. There would be a weight saving as well, no power steering pump required (from memory now) but would be ace on the track. Also possible to resell onto other forums, Ibiza and Polo would be swappable.

Just need to get some numbers to see if it is worthwhile

A smaller steering wheel may give the effect of a quick rack? :)  A little like lopping 1" off the shifter stick gives effect of short shifter? :)

Excellent thank you! I had a look on Quaife's website earlier and was thinking about firing an email to them to see what they could do for me (or us depending if there's any further interest). I would definitely want to keep my PAS though - can't see it being an issue to just change the gearing surely?...

As for daily transport, I'd just pick up a second hand one and send that off. I'm assuming it will be fully refurbished once modified.

I would consider that, if it wasn't for the fact that a) I want my airbag, and  b ) I've just spent £170 getting the standard one re-trimmed!! :D

Fair enough - airbags are no longer a concern for me so have a 330mm wheel fitted.  Had a 300mm one before that, but that was a little silly. :D

I'd be interested in this if it ever gets going, as my rack needs changing anyway... just cba until summer.

Also have a couple of spare racks from PD130 Ibizas that could be used as exchanges :)

i got a rack pm me

Only experience I've had of a quick rack recently was fitting a Xsara phase one VTS rack to my Pug 306 GTi6. Was a much faster rack and made the car proper twitchy to drive at higher speed, made it a lot more nervous.

Sometimes faster aint always better....

Now if you could develop a Fabia to have the same amount of steering feel as a normal 306 Gti6 I'd be very, very interested, alas with it having EPS I doubt very much can be done about steering feel (not weight - feel)

Quick or standard?

That sounds like a plan.
