Estate bike rack

Featured Replies

So my estate should be ready for collection next week. I need to find a way of moving about 5 bikes. Already have two roof carriers but was thinking of a rear carrier for the other 3 bikes. Spoke to skoda and they don't sell anything yet apparently.

Anyone have an estate yet and tried a bike carrier?

No help to you, but i have a 4 bike tow bar mounted rack hence ordering a tow bar from the factory, then a roof box too for the big trips!

In my own opinion, you dont want to be hanging any weight off the tailgate, but then you will need a light board etc anyway.

Take a look at the Thule options, I know you can get the 4 bike versions, not sure you can squeeze a 5th, be aware of roof weight limits also..

Is it not possible you can go for 4 on the roof, and then the smallest bike, (say a kids bike)  wheels off, pedals off, and lay the bike in the boot? then stack all other gear on top ? (you could create a custom shelf to put over the bike on the bottom to enable you to flat load.)

I use the Thule version similar to above to carry 4 bikes, not sure that you would fit a 5th on.

Probably want to look for footage of the recent Tour of Britain, IIRC there were a few new Superbs ferrying bikes around behind the riders....

There are weight limits for the towbar too, the manual says what weights you can apply at different distances away from the rear of the car.

I doubt there's much difference in weight limits between roof and towbar. It may even be the case that you can put more on the roof...haven't got the manual to hand though.

I haven't spec'd the tow bar. Not worth it for the 10 times I'll carry the bikes on the cars two year lease. Having come from a caravelle with a four bike rear rack I hadn't considered the no.plate and lights being visible at the rear with most carriers as the VW rack was high mounted. Guess I'll need to look into similar high mounted carriers for the rear.

Or maybe the boots big enough to get three kids bikes in!

Thanks - Just seen that - this is the first car which has ever advised on these limits before and i have had a lot of tow bar bike mounted racks over the years..
