Door Warning Light Problem

Featured Replies

For some months the door warning light on the dashboard of our Mk 1 estate has been coming on although all doors are firmly shut. It's definitely a fault, as it would go off if you hit a big bump and then come back on when you hit the next one. Opening and slamming the driver's door fixes it for a while, then it comes back on.

Iy's happening most of the time now; the car went in for its annual service and MOT (it's a 2001 model) and I asked them to fix it. Sod's law being what it is, the check came up NFF (no fault found) - but there it was again when I drove home.

The helpful chap at the garage said the door open sensor was in the lock itself, not a separate little button as in the good old days. So my instinct is to squirt WD40 everywhere around the lock mechanism and see if it'll free up - but can anyone give me more precise advice on where to squirt? Or is there another cure? Any help appreciated!

I greased the locks on mine the other day, I notice that pushing in the locks while the door was open turned off the light on the door (so assumed there was some sort of sensor on the door catch). Sounds like a loose/broken connection.

Hopefully you'll get it sorted, at least you narrowed it down to one door anyway.

Thanks, GAFF, I'll have a closer look at it tomorrow. I'm hoping it's just something a bit sticky, rather than a broken/intermittent connection, which could be expensive to fix.

But then I'm planning to trade the car in soon, when it will become the dealer's problem!

You'd probably get a fair idea if the lock is sticking by pushing a screwdriver etc in to activate the lock when door opened. From the sounds of it the theres a dodgy connections rather than a sticking door lock (I hope I'm wrong though).

One thing I noticed that when pushing in the lock mechanism is that its like a double closing on it, it seems to lock when you push it in but if you push it further it seems to lock more (if ya get my meaning).
