I have a 2001 Fabia with the 1.4 litre (50kw) petrol engine and it is practically leaking petrol! I put in 20 euro of petrol which works out at about 17.83 litres and I only got 120 miles on that.And all that driving was done on a motorway with no Colin mcRae style driving.My old Renault 19 gets nearly double that. Any ideas? Also the car has only the driver in it, no air-con was on,no luggage in the car,no unburnt petrol is coming out of the exhaust,engine runs perfectly.

Its the basic model with practically no electrics so Im stumped. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the ECU needs to be remapped? Perhaps the petrol-air mix is too high or something like that.Please help:)

Think there must be a problem with these engines.

Just wait till the 'flatspots' start happening at 2000rpm!

I recon its got something to do with the throttle sender switch, as theres no cable, the ecu recons more fuel is needed.

Do you have a similar problem? I only got the car last week and considering the cost of the fuel so far I think I will have to get rid of the skoda.Although I dont want to as I really like it!

You need to monitor the fuel consumption over an extended mileage to arrive at a meaningful overall fuel consumption figure. Fill the tank to brim, note the mileage, keep a record of all the fuel you put in subsequently, and finish by brimming the tank again and noting the mileage and fuel put in.

I would suggest what Denis has said, run through a full tank and note the mileage. Then fill the car up and calculate the mpg (L per 100km) from that. I am sure it should be more than the figure you have quoted in your initial post. The cause could be any of a number of things, if you purchased from a dealer I would go back and tell them something is wrong, but I would run a whole tankfull to see how it goes.

It's just an idea but maybe your rear brakes are binding or sticking slightly? It's amazing how much of a drop in milage you can get for just having the handbrake adjusted too tight.

I find that when i fill the tank on my fabia, the computer tells me that i shud get about 280 miles out of it.

But is your driving it graduly gets worse, and by the time the low fuel light comes on again, I've only done 200 at best!

I usually do about 60 miles a day, and im lucky to get that out of a tenner!

It's not the most economical engine, it's not very powerful in a heavy car. It's also a very old skoda engine (not VW) so it's not really the absolute apex, The picture is the highest i can get from mine (without being done for kerb crawling), try keeping it over 2.2k RPM as thats where the torque comes in!

I agree bud, I find the cars alot more frugal when driven hard!(and more fun:cards: )

Hey guys thanks for the ideas, I have been keeping an eye on the fuel.But it still seems high. I have 1995 Nissan Pulsar 1.6petrol which is getting better milage.Its weird really, I can actually see the needle move while driving! Barely scraped 100k on 9.3 litres of fuel. Apart from the fuel though I am very happy with the car.

Mine "drank" 8.6 litres per 100km for the last 900km. This is the reported fuel usage by the BC on MFA2 and it's damn accurate. This consumption is obtained in the city 95% with short distances, lower than 5-6km. The medium temperature was somewhere arround +5C. It's normal driving, not going over 3500-4000rpm. I usualy switch gears arround 2500-3000rpm.

For realy short distances (2km) with cold engine the MFA1 reports 10-11%, the engine does not have enough time too warm and the errors are big at such small quantities.

During summertime usualy on MFA2 I obtain 7.3-7.8% droven above 80% in the city. City is pretty big with heavy traffic arround noon. At that time I can see arround 12% for realy short distances, but afterwards it drops to 8.5-9%.

Im currently going through a paranoid stage with my 1.4 MPi, im running through a whole tank, on average how many miles should I expect to see on a tank (well I put 43 litres in)

The car has done about 27500 miles.

6.7 miles per litre = just over 30 mpg :eek:

On my 12v I'm getting just under 10 miles per litre = 45 mpg on country road running.

But this is what I suspect may be happening

IIRC the 1.4 mpi was set for Euro III/IV and had the 'Drive by Wire' throttle response. This was much criticised at launch in 2000. First call would be to check this out.

Certainly you should not be getting figures as low as this. Do the tank to tank thing. If consumption is less than 8 miles per litre (I had a 1.4 mpi on hire in Czech and was getting more than this) take it back to be checked. If the car is still not OK Under your agreement with the finance company you may be able to get your cash back by rejecting the car.

Of course if you're not in the UK rules may be different, so check first.

If the car was from a Skoda franchise and you get no joy take it up with Skoda UK or your Contry distributor.
