Seasonal Creaks and Rattles?

Featured Replies

Yep, they do all seem to be temperature related. I have a summer creak from the steering column which is louder than the winter buzzing from the left and right vent areas of the dash.

You almost need someone to hold the wheel while you go around with a stethescope and some foam (Yes, Illegal, don't condone it etc etc....)

I bought my Fabia a month ago. The week before I collected it my Dad had been to test drive it on my behalf, he said "all good son" so i bought it..

Got there, left fore court, heard a scratchy scratch.. spet 10 min pushing/hitting/pulling general parts.. worked out it was something INSIDE the dash, behind and above the stereo :-(

It's getting worse too.. it's like a creaky door, that someones found the exact point of creak and is moving it a few inch back and forth, really..

funny thing? I call my Dad "Dad, it creaks".. Dad says "don't be silly, was fine when I drove it".. 2 weeks later I'm hone for Christmas and Pops has a drive.. and says "Wow, that dash really does creak"... so what did the garage do between him test driving it and my collecting it?

Rob.. (summit rattles in the drivers door too, but that's only small).. my K reg escort wasn't even this rattley!

oh, one more thing.. how easy is it to loosen and tighten the dash, or indded, the parts behind the stereo.. took it out, and the lil draw... no screws, although a small piece of folded up masking tape fell down and out.. after that, 10 times worse.. hmm, there maybe a link...

I think most of us could do with spending a good 8 hours on a weekend, armed with bits of foam, tweaking/pulling/pushing/lifting all the loose bits of trim and padding out under. :D

On the other hand , you could do what I do on a weekend , which is turn the stereo up to mask said rattles , then spend all afternoon on the settee watching Gillette Soccer Saturday and drinking cans of Stella......:D

Mines ratlle smore too but going to have them sorted when I go to the dealers with a list. My side windows rattle in the cold too!!!

Speakers rattles but I know for fact it's a problem with the speaker unit and want it replacing, sorted glove box when I got the car.

I think the plastic surroud to the gear stick creaks too but once it warms up everythig is fine. Whats funny is that when you take it to the dealer the weahter seems to warm all of a sudden or is sunny so it's like a greenhouse in the car.

I will take them for a drive this time so they beleive me.

I ahve been told I have very very good hearing so I think I spot more than most would.

Is it like a kind of 'clicking' sound? This sounds like the common Fabia dashboard rattle. It's essentially where the dashboard is secured to the frame. There are a number of threads explaining how to clear it up, but I don't have time to search them out this minute. Essentially you need to prise the air vents out from above the stereo (using a flat-head screwdriver, and you'll need to pull quite hard because it is secured in with clips) and disconnect the cable from the back so you can put the vents aside completely. If you then shine a torch to the back, near the top you will see a metal section and possibly a metal bar. You need to pack this area tightly with some foam/paper/cloth. Push it in with a long screwdriver or something. It's about eight or nine inches back so the handle needs to be quite long. Connect the vents back up and push back in firmly. That should sort the rattle.

Sadly, there's a good chance another rattle will develop elsewhere. Mine is currently rattling just above the speedo/rev risplay area. It clears up if I wedge a laminated membership card above the clear plastic cover and the moulding, but this causes the display to cloud up in cold weather!!

Let me know if you'd appreciate a few piccies to illustrate and I'll see if I can put some together for you over the weekend.

I haven't got any dash rattles (YET!), but my drivers seat creaks and squeaks like a whores matress over every bump, when you lean forward during braking & backward movement during acceleration.

I should take the car back to the dealers as its only two months old, but from past experiance from other brands, the car will return with more rattles then it started with, and generally comes home with scratched paint etc, from where they couldn't careless about throwing spanners around.

I had the creaky seat thing too, but it went away when I repositioned the seat. It seemed as though it was a little bit squint in the runners.
