Driving the wrong way..

Featured Replies

On the way home today, I was going round the roundabout above a motorway junction - only to meet someone coming towards me, going round the roundabout the wrong way!

Luckily neither of us were going fast (it was snowing) so I could steer round him fairly easily, but it could have been very nasty. (And I don't know what happened when he met the traffic behind me).

I saw there was a fatal accident recently after someone drove the wrong way down a motorway section. What are you supposed to do when this happens?

Miss them!!!!!

Yeah.... but do you aim left or right, or slam the brakes on? The one coming towards me today seemed to at least be keeping to (his/her) left - so I managed to miss by keeping to my left.

However if I'd come across someone used to driving on the right, on the continent say, (which might explain why they were driving the wrong way in the 1st place), that wouldn't have worked...

At heathrow there are two rounderbouts u must go round the wrong way  !!

Erm... Pray it doesn't happen again? That happens quite often in London when people decide to skip the queue of traffic and floor it on the wrong side of the road, usually having near misses at the upcoming junction. Or those who career across the road having spotted a parking space. That said, it's rare in snow.

I hope it hasn't fazed you too much and at least you can log that to your experiences to be on the lookout. It's gotta be a matter of judgment though, hasn't it? (Split second decision-making according to all traffic conditions.)

Glad you're OK and hope the other driver is also of course.

In the UK, steer left. On the continent, steer right. That's the 'natural' direction to go in during an emergency avoidance situation.

It's one of the few things that always worried me post-passing my test in Holland and then moving to the UK for a while, ended up here rather permanently in the end ;)

Glad no-one was hurt, and in this case, it sure proves appropriate speed made a difference :)

I'd agree with mo, often happens around my way! Though it's not only roundabout that they do it at.

Best thing to do is try not to panic and freeze up! Turning to the left is a good call though on a round about I would have probably pulled to the right (depending on size of the roundabout and my position on it)

Have to say even when in france I still went the correct way, which is the wrong way to us, I just cant see how people get it wrong

I saw that happen once at the roundabout at the Redheugh Bridge on the Gateshead side of Tyneside, and let me tell you, it was not half going around quickly. Luckily I was not on the roundabout at the time, but waiting.... its not often i look to my left when joining a roundabout, but I'm glad I did this time! God only knows what happenned at the other side of the roundabout. The way i look at it though is that it'd actually have to take some effort to do this, so I'm not sure how you'd accidentally get it wrong - and if you do, you should not be on the road at all.

I went round a roundabout at about 3am once to find a car coming round the wrong way, avoided him then realised it was my F'ing 17 year old brother!!!

Followed him home to realise the little **** was p*ssed right up!!

One severe *******ing later and threats to tell the police/parents and he's genuinely learnt his lesson and never done it since (was about 6 years ago) he says the main thing that stops him drink driving now is the thought that he could have killed his own brother!!

Anyone that cant go round a roundabout the correct way (wether p*ssed or not) shouldn't be on the road. it should be one serious mistake and your license is revoked permanently.

I once came off the A41 roundabout at Bicester, heading for the M40, and met an old chap in a nice, shiny Nova proceeding the wrong way down the outside lane of the dual carriageway!

There's a Garden Centre about halfway down, and he must have turned the wrong way out of the exit.

I flashed my headlights and sounded the horn, but him and his missus (both wearing hats) just peered at me as I went past.

Used to meet up pre cricket matches at a pub actually situated on a roundabout (Bowling Green in Lichfield).

Set off in convoy following our leader who promptly turned the wrong way into the traffic.

He was a police officer:thumbup:

I met a Nova belting it towards me in the fast lane of the dual carriageway in Ireland a few years back- I couldn't believe it but when I mentioned it at my destination- and not a word of a lie- the guy said "if you found yourself going the wrong way you would get in the fast lane and get to the other end as fast as you could"!

I conclude there are MANY idiots about.
