Servicing

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am planning on my first DIY service, I have most of the necessary tools and a set of ramps. I will get the oil and filters from TPS or online, depending where is cheapest.

The car is 9 years old and nearly at 100k miles. It has been regularly serviced, other than the normal oil and filter changes it has had the following replaced: cambelt at 60k miles, fuel filter at 90k miles. I replaced both drop links and tie rod ends 3 months ago as they were shot. Brake fluid again was replaced 3 months ago, and the coolant was changed 2 weeks ago when I replaced my expansion tank. From looking at the service history the gearbox oil doesn't look like it has been replaced recently. How regular should this be changed?

I'm planning on replacing the oil, oil filter, new sump plug, air filter, cabin filter with the exception of the fuel filter. Apart from inspecting discs + pads, suspension components, bushes etc is there anything else that I should be looking out for/replacing?

Any help will be much appreciated

I posted something very similar when I did my first DIY service on my 1.4TDI, some useful tips in the thread

All went well and the best advice I can give is not to overthink anything and just keep it simple. Almost due my next service now acutally! The gearbox oil isn't strictly necessary, but it won't do any harm to change it at that mileage, I had mine changed as the gear change was very notchy and stiff when cold.
