rear offside abs sensor

Featured Replies

how expensive is it to supply and fit new abs sensor to offside rear wheel.

If it is just the sensor around £30 for branded (recommended) and fitting is just a matter of removing the wheel undo the retaining screw, pull out the sensor and unplug the wire. Fitting is the reverse. It would take you no more than an hour to do including getting the tools out and away afterwards. If a garage then expect an hours labour.

thx for that. dont suppose anyone has a part number for this?

If it's a speed sensor then it might be built into the hub. I had to replace 2 on my mk5 golf at a cost of £350.

The speed sensor is just push fit into the hub and retained with a screw. If the ABS ring has failed then that is built into the hub but I thought that was replaceable on VAG cars though the labour costs might make replacing the hub cheaper.

I'm assuming you've had a fault code reader stating it is the offside wheel that is at fault. To ensure it is the sensor and not the ring simply swap the sensors from near to offside and see if the fault changes wheel.

yep was checked out by the AA yesterday and it gave the fault code for right offside sensor intermittant fault.

Probably the reluctor ring in the hub they go more often than the actual sensor.

Not a serviceable part unfortunately, bad bit of design. you need a new hub.

If you do end up changing the hub consider changing the stone guard at the same time. A bit like timing belts and water pumps it's much easier and cheaper to change the guard at the same time as the hub and they don't cost much.

The guards are aluminum and they oxidise around the mounting bolts and eventually come loose but stay on the hub clanging around like a dustbin lid.

That's what I was trying to explain! Thanks for the more detailed responses.

I do alot of vcds scans for this and from what ive seen when it says intermittant fault its always been the speed ring. Ive had it twice on my car and both times it cost me £30 for a new hub on ebay and 30 minutes to fit. Its a simple job and cheap aslong as you have the right tools.

cheers guys will let you know the outcome

just changed one on my octavia. sensor came up as faulty. had to drill it out to replace. that didnt fix so better off changing whole lot. got 2nd hand hub and sensor for 50e garage charged 50 to install. my advise is if doing work remove hub and inspect ring. if damaged replace.

Wheel off head in the wheel arch you can just see the ring through a hole.

If it is the reluctor ring it's usually a little chunk only  or so 10mm that had fallen out. The sensor will pick up the gap as the wheel slowing down for a tiny proportion of a turn every time and throw this up as an implausible signal.

I was £120 for a VAG hub. The indy I used at that time only fitted OEM parts although it was guaranteed for 2yr by doing that.

Long going thread. But I concur. I bought the sensor and hub from Autodoc having sourced part numbers from a friend at VW. The hub had corroded and knocked out the sensor leading to ABS/ESP lights. I changed the sensor and light went but DSG wouldn't shift properly no 5th etc. So fitted the hub. All good. Parts under £50! Love my L&K Octavia again.
