Laptop Hard Disk

Featured Replies

Might be a daft question but here goes...

I know that you can buy internal HDDs for desktop machines, but I fancy upgrading the one in my laptop. Can you buy these from the likes of Dabs in the same way you can for desktops? Can't say I've seen any specifically for notebook machines...

Yes, you can...look for 2.5" IDE drives, and chances are that will work. Majority of laptops use the same form factor for disk drives, so these should be alright...

PC World sell brown box 2.5" HDD in their Component Shop.

On a sort-of related note, where can you get DVD/CDRW drives for laptops? My usual suspects deny any knowledge of their availability, and I'd like to upgrade my middle-aged laptop.

That's a bit more difficult because you need to either get a drive from another machine with the same drawer cover etc or a bare drive with the mounting holes and eject button lining up wityh yours. The 2nd option is the most likely when it comes to availability then the fiddly bit is changing all the bits over from your own drive to the new one. Alternatively you can get any old drive (as they are pretty standard) and slot it in without the bezel although it looks awful and lets dust in.

What make and model is your laptop?

For the DVD/CDRW upgrade issue, I would consider an external USB solution. I've seen Freecom external DVD burners for around £80. Probably cheaper than a genuine upgrade part too.

What laptop is it anyway?

Find 'em on www.linitx.com or www.mini-itx.com etc.

I'd price check them maybe using uk.pricerunner.com before buying though.
