Thinking of changing to a Scout

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Currently have a 2011 Octavia 1.8 TSi Elegance Hatch with 55k on it but have always been tempted by the Scout Estate. Just seen one come up in my local area which looks a nice clean example. It's a 12 plate but the mileage is a little high with about the same as my current car. Tempted - I do a bit of hillwalking, cycling/mountain biking and hoping to do some sea kayaking next year so the Scout could be very handy with its 4wd and more useful boot.

Financially is this a good decision - looks like the change will be about £5 1/2k? Also - ging from the Elegance to the Scout is there anyway I can work out what I'd lose in terms of spec - both cars are standard with no optional extras?

Thanks for your help!

Is the Scout petrol or diesel? Scout is a great car and I would expect likely to hold value better than the elegance hatch. If buying a Scout be prepared to have either to replace or refurb the wheels at some point - unless you don't mind them looking tatty! Scout was well specced as standard so will have auto lights, auto wipers, auto dimming interior mirror, dual zone climate control, headlamp wash, rear parking sensors, front fog lights and interior sill protectors. Many second hand ones will also have a tow bar. It won't have MFSW, maxidot or heated seats if it's standard.

Thanks for the response. It's a Diesel CR - checked it out today and the wheels are unmarked. TBH I don't think this car has been used offroad at all so that's a big plus point. Seems to have the maxi dot as well so might not be as standard as I thought!

Find out when the haldex oil was changed. It's every 40k miles. Price varies from £60 - £100. Have a good look at the state of the suspension, the off road 'give' is more down to the tyre sidewall than suspension travel. When travelling over rough ground I tend to leave the car in 1st or 2nd gear. When out dog walking, I use a car park in the local country park that others avoid due to potholes and it flooding in heavy rain. The Scout breezes through it.

If you live in an area that is susceptible to snow or ice, I would strongly suggest getting a set of cold weather tyres, you won't regret it.

When you open the door, does a picture of the car with a door open appear on the screen? If yes, then MaxiDot. If no, then standard FL information display.

If it has MaxiDot, the original owner may well have ticked a few other boxes too.......check to see if it also has HIDs and/or MFSW too. After that, everything else is fairly easy to add. ;)

Following on from what Sarge said.....essentially, the standard Scout should be specc'd almost identically to the Elegance.

+1   most important especially if the mileage is high ------ before all the usual things for checking

The service book won't mention the Haldex service.

Also I thought on the FL the Haldex service is time not mileage dependent.

FL (Haldex II) oil change is every 4 years.

Don't forget the 4x4 estate is simply a Scout without the Allroad (Tupperware) looks, and the 4mm difference between the Scout and the 4x4 in terms of ground clearance is simply down to a bigger wheel/tyre combo, so you might want to look at that as an option also.

for clarity  my book (under)   "60k km or four years whichever comes first"    states "oil of  Haldex clutch  " (only every 60000Km)"

Is your car pre FL or FL?

Thanks for the info guys - very helpful. I'm fairly certain taht there's a bit more difference from the standard 4x4 than just bigger wheels and tyres - the suspension is different for a start.

Went in tonight to have another look and there is some odd goings on with the price - originally 11k on autotrader but then 10988 with Arnold Clark, then went to 9988 on sale for 1 day and is now back to 10688. They're doing a £300 off voucher too so that would mean £10388 but I'm not sure whether they should honour the 9988 price which I printed off their website. Need to check!

Trundlenut - both my current car and this one are FL versions.

The only difference between the 4x4 and Scout in terms of running gear is the size of the wheels and tyres, that's it. The suspension is the same.

The Scout has 17mm of ground clearance over the slightly ordinary looking standard 4x4 estate which is 40mm higher than the standard front wheel drive car. You also get proper full under body protection which you don't on the 4x4. Also you get the smug :notme:  feeling of owning a Scout and  feeling that you didn't go for a compromise. The Scout also holds its value better as well. The side protection has saved mine many a time from scratches from branches etc as I have some very rural locations to get to, with the right tyres its great off road and in snow.  As you can tell I really like mine!

My 4x4 has a metal sumpguard and plastic panels covering virtually the whole of the underside, what more does the Scout have?

it's the early FL (first of the GEN IV ?)  they both have the stronger suspension but on the petrol have shorter undertray/protection--some thing to do with heat?   my compromise was 15K brand new,  how much is a scout?    the saving over the competition bought me a solar panel system which is now,  and for the next 20+ years paying 50p/Kw  good value Skoda's

Yep, they look terrific sat on driveways on housing estates. No doubt the local yoofs constantly enquire as to whether the owner is a farmer, gamekeeper, countryside ranger, etc. etc.

Me, I prefer a 4x4 in 'stealth-mode'. But each to their own. :D

By stealth mode do you mean tiny wheels and massive arch gap?

Same here on my 4x4... Big metal sump guard, raised rough road suspension, underbody protection but no plastic nappies.

I also have a higher spec (see below) and also prefer the stealth mode as well given I've had the odd tweak made...

Interesting the way this thread's turned out - have to say the last few posts have been really helpful - not

...good job I am actually a countryside ranger then!

In my Ranger/Warden days the Skooby Forester was the run around of choice, but its gone all SUV sadly.

Sure the front wheel arch is cavernous, but it doesn't bug me enough to part with £800 for 17" alloys/black circles to be rid of it.

What would bug me more would be being ribbed for running around in a "poor man's Audi Allroad" when the capability rather than the 'look' is my biggest concern.

If I ever made a habit of going off-road, or lived at the end of a particularly rough track, I'd be in the market for something other than a saggy-arsed Octy 4x4/Scout estate. As it is, I just need the assurance of 4x4 plus winter tyres for 4 months of the year to ensure I can get to work and back when the weather gets beyond the capabilities of the Fabia.

All I'd suggest to flippin' ec is not to restrict themselves to the Scout - a 4x4 might just suit their needs.

(Also having a G** post code means I know enough people who have purchased from ****** ****** to discourage me from ever doing so).

well you did ask   at the end of the day I guess the message is anything secondhand and Haldex make sure it's been serviced   best of luck whatever :sun:

Thanks guys - decided after all to buy the Scout and am picking it up on Monday. Once the garage knocked £1000 off it and gave me a decent p/x for my TSi I'm happy with my purchase.

Now I just need to work out whether my fathers winter wheels and tyres off his old Superb (and his spare wheel) can fit the Scout

Hope you're happy with it - just make sure Arnold's after-sales treatment of you is as good as their pre-sales.

If you're planning on carrying any weight on the rear end you might wish to consider fitting these...

They do a great job of keeping the nose from pointing skywards and the arse-end from dragging should you, like me, on occasion wish to fill the boot and hang a tow-ball-mounted bike rack off the back end.

Good luck.

Cheers Rab - I'll take a look at those

I'm no huge fan of AC's either but they do have a lot of vehicles for sale and these car's aren't exactly 2 a penny
