Is the Fabia ideal for long driving/high mileage

Featured Replies

Hi, I currently have a 2008 1.2 Skoda Fabia in the family, with about 80,000kms on the clock.

I was planning on using the car to drive home from college and back on weekends, Its around a 480km (3.5 hrs) round trip! with a mix of dual carraigeway, gentle hills. The car will rarely be used during the week.

My question is, Is this a good idea i.e. leaving a car unused for a few days then doing high mileage (being a 1.2 petrol engine!)

any answers are welcome, its probably a silly topic but I was just curious.

Thanks!

Shouldn't be any problem with it, the only thing I would think would be effected would be fuel economy. Of course a diesel will be more economical on long journeys, but it wouldn't be worth losing money trading in for what you want.

Welcome to the forum.

Which country are you in?

480km is 300 miles,

do you mean a drive 3.5 hour each way (240km)?

i do a similar driving pattern to you in my 2013 HTP 70, which might have the higher ratio box than yours? not sure?

The HTP seems great for such stuff. okay its not fast, but it sits at 70mph at 3k rpm and returns 50mpg at that.

overall, over most longer journeys i seem to get around 47mpg. which could be improved if i didnt have progressive driving drilled into my head.

its more than fine for it though. its comfy, its smooth, Tech1e will fit you Cruise Control, put a SatNav in (ive got the Columbus), along with an armrest if you havent got one and its surprisingly good at mile munching. ill happily sit in mine all day.. then get back and feel as fresh as when i got in.

cannot complain at all

Thanks for the replies, I'm not worried about the speed issue, I can get over that.

@ GoneOffskiroottoot  Yes its a 3.5 hr, 240km drive one way, so it will be 7 hrs of driving a weekend!

Wouldn't say it's "ideal" but I do a commute of between 100-115 miles (depending on route/traffic) and get 60mpg (Greenline II) and I don't shut the garage door at the end of the day wishing I'd bought something other than a Fabia. I cruise at 65mph in 5th gear (2000 rpm) and in towns its nippy enough.

Mostly down to personal choice and how much money you're prepared to part with, but I average 25K pa (1yr 11mth = 47K on clock) and it suits my needs/budget.

I cannot see the problem really. Any car will do better with a few longer distances than a lot of short ones.

Should be fine. Start to drop to a 1L engine and I'd question taking it on longer motorway journeys but thats it, really.

my 1.2 70 is well within its comfort zone at 70..

the one time it could maybe do with abit more poke, is when the AVG speed zones go from 50 - 70.  then all the 2.0tdi's (and a keen driver in a Golf R) edge away, but other than that i set the cruise at 75mph and leave it there. no prob.. still returns 50mpg.

I shall be driving my 2012 1.2 se

htp 70hp only 10000 on clock from Norfolk to Costa del Sol no worries next spring.

Ahem, (clearing of throat) Set it at 70MPH is what I think you meant. Just a typo, officer-honest!
