Skoda Superb Winter Wheels on Octavia Scout?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Looking for some info about whether i would be able to use these winter wheels and tyres on my Octavia or not.

Just bought a 12 plate Scout. My father is in the process of trading in his 13 plate Skoda Superb 2.0Tdi Cr for a new Superb and has been told by Skoda that the winter wheels and tyres he has will not fit the new car. I am trying to work out whether they would fit my new car which would save me a heap of money!

His wheels are 18" but the Scouts are 17" - I'm not sure what information I would need to work out in order to check whether they would fit or not?

Similarly he has a space saver wheel which is also an 18" - would it be possible to use this wheel and tyre for the Scout or would I be better off ordering a new one from Skoda?

Thanks for your help! Sorry if this all seems obvious!

For insurance purposes you can only use wheel and tyres sizes approved by Skoda. The list of which should be on the inside of the fuel filler flap. The MkII Octy Scout never came with 18 inch wheels.

I have had both 17 and 16 inch cold weather tyres fitted to the Scout. From personal experience, during heavy snowfall I found the wheel arches 'jammed' with snow that would then freeze, and was difficult to remove. For the last two years I have had 16 inch steel wheels fitted with narrower 205 tyres, and I found them to be a lot better in the snow.

For cold weather tyres I can recommend Nokian. Can't comment on other brands.

Thanks for the advice Fin. I've seen Scouts on here with 18" wheels but if they're not insurable there's no way I'd be doing that.

Never having used snow tyres before (despite having commuted weekly between Glasgow and Inverness over the winter of 2012) how does it work with a spare? Do you have a spare in your car and what size is it (17 or 16 inch)?

I'l have a look at Nokian

Cheers!

18 inch wheels can be used on the scout but may incur additional insurance charges as they are a non approved size, ask your insurer for clarification.

Also I'd be surprised if the 18 inch wheels wouldn't fit a new superb?

Does seem strange but according to the dealer the set of wheels and tyres my father has for winter will not fit on the new Superb - not sure why as he'll have to sell them and buy a new set

Woah there!

Before you part with hard cash for new wheels/tyres check out All Season rubber first.

I've got Nokian winters on steels for the Octy but run All Seasons with both M+S and Mountain/Snowflake symbols on the Fabia, and the All Seasons work just fine in our part of the world. (Summer - what summer? - seldom getting up into the 20s).

I've used Vredestein Quatrac and Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons and would recommend either.

I get mine from Pneusonline, but Mytyres or Blackcircles will likely do them as well.

I suggested 16" steel wheels as the narrower tyre 205(same width as the standard 15" Pyxis alloys on the 4x4) are better in the snow than the Standard 225 width tyres of the Scout. Also with the amount of crud on the roads in winter you're more likely to suffer damage or delamination of the Proteus alloys, (it may have been sheer coincidence, but both sets of my Proteus alloys began to delaminate around the New Year).

It seems to be just a matter of time before the proteus alloys delaminate, and winter salted roads won't help.

I insured my Scout with all-season off-roads OK.

My spare Proteus managed to delaminate just sat there, simply from where the Skoda garage had nicked the lacquer when fitting the tyre.

Er, thanks for the editing Giz but I said "available", as in happy to lend to anyone who needs a full-sized spare and can be bothered to come and collect it.  Now it's delaminated its not exactly valuable and doesn't fit anything I currently have.

Jeeves, we try to be as fair to all members as possible, Available if anyone is interested...” certainly did not suggest to me that you were only offering to lend it out.

If that indeed was your intention then why not put that?

lend it out.

I believe I just did.

I have done a similar thing on another forum where my winter tyres were of no value but I was happy to lend my wheels to the more discerning forum members (in my opinion, so vetted by me) with those tyres still on for someone else to use up.  The wheels didn't fit my own car, but that's not to say they wouldn't fit the next one, whereas the rubber would have definitely aged.  The other forum also created a "Freecycle" type category as they too couldn't get their head around offering something that didn't have a price!

There's a degree of dangling the bait so that anyone interested makes a discreet enquiry and if you think they're OK you say Yes.

The alternative is to tell all and sundry "you can use my wheel" and then have to offend 99% who you don't think are right/don't trust etc.  I was sort of hoping that someone relatively local might make themselves known and return the favour in an as yet unknown way should I ever need it.

Just to be clear, I've previously offered a loan of the wheel to another forum member, but it has proved awkward logistically since we're in 2 non-neighbouring countries.

And no, I didn't get any details from the guy I recently lent something to to help him get home - but I got it back!  Maybe we're a bit more trusting up North.
