won't start - recent battery, recent long journeys, low mileage

Featured Replies

I have not so far had any problems with my Skoda Fabia 1.4. I bought in 2 years ago in vgc 1.4 2005 model and it has only done around 43000 miles. Fitted a new battery around 15 months ago. Had several long runs on fast roads in last ten days. Last used on Wednesday. Fine then.

Got in tonight and started it up, engine turned over and coughed as if it was about to start, then wheezed a bit and stopped. Now will not start, just wheezes. No warning lights or error messages on dash on Wednesday. Lights and dash and door locks still working. Not due a service. Any ideas?

Have a load of stuff for my sister who is moving house, in the boot since sunday. could that press on door lock and turn on light and drain battery? I am sure headlights were not left on. Any other possible causes?

breakdown service came out and basically said that or spark plugs although they look OK. got it started but it is def misfiring. Booked into garage for tuesday.

Did they attempt to read codes?

For basic diagnostics, an ELM327 and a smart phone running any of the numerous free apps (e,g, Torque) is a cheap way to gain info. ELM327 is way under a tenner on eBay.

If you do get one, toss the supplied mini-CD in the bin with a frown. Don't allow it near a windows PC without a major virus scanning.

For my 2p, in the current weather - wet/damp, it's possibly the coilpack(s) or HT leads.

I'm not sure if this would help you, but I've had a pretty similar problem and it was solved with a G62 sensor. You might want to take a look here.

Garage just phoned to say it needs 4 new coil packs, it is known issue for all cars in the VAG group and the garage replaces them all the time.  I think there was a recall sometime back, before I owned it, but in any case my car still  has the originals so has done well to get this far.

Enzo Ferrari had a plaque made for his desk that read "It is ALWAYS the ignition" (in Italian obviously) that he would simply point at when his engineers came to see him with an engine running problem.
