Playstation 2 Buying Advice Please

Featured Replies

Tried this post in the items wanted section, but no replies. To be honest, I'm after information and reviews as much as anything else, so will re-try here.

I'm looking at buying the kids (OK - and me too) a PlayStation 2 for Xmas.

Anyone seen any good offers? Does someone on here work for Sony? I seem to recall something from the discussion about Col's new telly. Any bargains you know of?

Will probably buy new, although 2nd hand considered. What should I look for? Do lasers burn out? Other issues?

Also I like driving games. Recommendations please. Don't particulary need the latest version - would rather have 3 or 4 of last years games for a tenner each than pay top whack for this years version.

Advice on steering wheels too please. Do they make the driving games more enjoyable. Do I need one that comes with pedals too? How / where do they mount? Can I just sit with it on my knee or do I need a table? Again, general buying advice welcome.

Am I better looking at a package / bundle deal?

You could always look for a reputable seller on Ebay or possibly a tested second hand unit from somewhere like Game (there will be lots about after Friday).

Games can be bought dead cheap now so I wouldn't get a bundle unless it includes games you or the kids would actually play.

Make sure you get a memory card though!#

Oh and cheapo driving game - GT3 (been out for ages now). Second hand copy of GT4 (not much more than 15 quid!)

Playstations are easy to service yourself but obviously the newer you can get the better (so try and get one of the new diddy slim ones)

My advise would be to get a Nintendo Gamecube. They are better machines, and have a longer shelf life as the PS3 will be out before the next generation Nintendo machine.

Safe to say that you're a bit of a gamecube fan then Laguna man? :D

Off to have a look at my local Asda at lunchtime - that one for

Ah now I see the logic of a PS2.

I really would drop this Gamecube quest... Youre beginning to sound like William (comedy Irish bloke who wouldnt let it drop with a penchant for polls that many didnt agree with.... ) He loved to fight a pointless cause..... You dont lurk in university buildings do you?

Yes I am. A bit of history. I had a Sony PS1 (when it was just PS). Had good fun with it, but then my garndfather, not realising I already had a console bought me a Nintendo 64. Wow what a difference, it completely blew the Play Station out of the water. The only down side was that the catridge based games were more expensive.

The PS 2 came out and my brother bought himself one. To be honest while it was better than the original, and it could play DVD movies (at a time when DVD video players were still expensive), I thought that the actual quality of the games was only very slightly better than the Nintendo 64, but that the PS2 took ages to load the software up etc.

When the Gamecube came out I was worried because it was disk based, but when I tried one out I was amazed to see that Nintendo had managed to keep the machine almost as quick as the cartridege based 64 for loading and saving games etc....wow! Also the quality of graphics etc was significantly better than the PS2 and the controller was better.

I like the game quality of the Xbox but may goodness but the machine is gigantic and the controller feels like it was designed for a gorilla's hands. So all in all it is Gamecube for me. I will needless to say look at the Xbox 360 and PS3 when I get the chance, but some how looking at that new Nintendo controller I think I will be sticking with them. I wonder if my cube games will run on the new machine?

I didn't think that I was annoying anyone? I am Irish.

Nintendo are not famous for their backwards compatability so they probably wont (at least not without purchasing some form of over priced adapter!)

But you do hang out in University buildings... and your breach of a ban by re-registering under a new name may upset one or two when they find out William. Surely it would be better to come clean rather than "lurking" under a new name?

I come clean I am William. I registered this account to ask about Octavia heater motors. I am sorry about that but I only ever intended to ask the one tech question. Then earlier this week an old Felicia that I have as a second car developed a leak in its sunroof. Got caught up in general discussions which I had never intended to do.

Just off track slightly

If anyone on here is a serious driving game person I have a game frame complete with Logitech Wheel & Pedal box for sale, new they are about

Your presence doesnt offend me.. the "gods" will decide.

Nor me.

Back to thread, good point about the memory card. Why mine has suddenly stopped working I don't know.Darn

Yes, Satoru Iwata of Nintendo has stated the Revolution will accept 3 and 5 inch media discs and be back compatibable with the Gamecube. It is also reported as as having facilities to download and play retro titles back to the NES era.

Read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Revolution for info.

Back on original topic, as to what games to get for the Playstation 2 this site

http://www.metacritic.com/games/ps2/

I tried my local Asda too, and they were well over

Ps2's are good machines although suffer from the same issues the ps1 did. They suffer fro cheap dvdrom drives (i am on my second) and I heard that the slimline ones like to overheat, but I cannot confirm this. Definitely worth getting one though. My gamecube is boxed waiting to go on ebay but I wont be selling my ps2

i'll be keeping my PS2 for a while and the x-box

i want one of each of the newer generation stuff but i can happily wait till they stop costing really silly money

That's if they have any stock! My local store couldn't tell me when they might have stock

Let us know if anyone manages to get this deal.

Not had any luck matching the Asda
