Turbo oil seals

Featured Replies

Just read a post about these oil seals can u replace them without forking out for a new turbo as mine seems to be burning oil seriously bad 300 mile or less between top ups but it seems to drink the oil more when a put me foot down can this happen if the oil seals in the turbo have gone

Mine has just started to show signs of a leaking turbo oil seal.

I think the general consensus is that since the turbo has to come off anyway you may as well replace it.

For my car I can get a refurbished turbo for around £270.

Are you getting white smoke out the exhaust?

If you've just had a recon turbo, take it back to the place that fitted it, and have a conversation about how your oil consumption has rocketed since they fitted the replacement.

cheers. No white smoke but plenty of black when a put me foot down.

Al see the lad that fitted it when a get in touch with him been trying for a couple of days now it wasn't a garage that fitted it cheers.

They did replace the oil feed pipes when they did the turbo didn't they?

That's different; for some reason you're not getting the mapped (I don't mean the car is remapped here, standard cars have boost/fuel maps too) boost, which gives you over-fuelling and hence black smoke (and possibly a relative lack of power). Have a listen for turbo-intercooler-manifold pipe joints that are leaking.

No a didn't put new oil pipes on and no remap cheers

Well, your mate should have replaced the oil feed pipe, and at #9 I was talking about an air pipe leaking causing a lack of boost, hence over-fuelling, and hence black smoke.

Most companies won't honour any warranty on a turbo if you haven't fitted a new feed pipe.

It's best practice to fit a new pipe as a good supply of oil is imperative on these turbos and it's just not worth skipping for the sake of a few quid while you're at it.

Black smoke during hard acceleration on a PD (without DPF) is not unusual (especially on a taxi after being in stop start traffic), unless it didn't do it before the turbo was fitted.

And thick black smoke would indicate a boost issue... so it's either the turbo that is broken but would also be accompanied by some interesting noises from the turbo or it's as simple as a boost pipe has popped off... which is very common following any work requiring the pipes to be disconnected as the clips are rubbish!

No it's always been smoky since a bought it a was never told that a had to replace the oil pipes when fitting a new turbo but a do appreciate all the replys thanks.

If was oil it would be blue smoke and you would smell it. If the oil is on the intake side then serious amounts going in can lead to diesel runaway. Not very common but if its using a serious amount of oil in such a short time and there is no exhaust colour change its most likely going in the intake and combusting with the diesel?

How can a check that thanks

So does anyone know how to check if oil is getting into the intake side cheers cos a don't understand how that could be cheers

I would have thought disconnecting the pipe between the turbo and intercooler and having a look would be the answer.

Thanks for that will do

Thanks for that will do

You will need to remove the airbox and the pipe to the turbo to get to the pipe coming out of the turbo.
