Engine Mods: Declared to DVLA?

Featured Replies

Just about to send off V5C to get my new private plates sorted and I noticed that the vehicle max. net power is listed as 96 kW.

So with regard to remaps, in addition to informing your insurance company, how many of you guys send off your vehicle reg. document to amend the details regarding power output?

John.

Hmm good question - is it required by law? (I know the insurance bit is required)

Do you know EXACTLY the power output to tell them. Probably not IMO

What about emissions?

What about emissions?

"more soot"

IIRC i thought you only needed to declare changes in CC

I know you don't "have" to declare it but I think they have missed a trick - all these modded cars with more emissions, they could charge higher car tax :D

The yearly car tax paid is decided by the engine emissions for particular engine/car at manufacture.

I have read somewhere that if an engine is either moddified or changed for a different type in a car, then the cheaper emission group payment for the car tax no longer applies and the default full car tax is payable.

If you don't advise them of the changes, then you could be accused of avoiding paying the correct car tax.

With the interlinking of databases these days, they would be able to pick it up from the insurance database, assuming you have advised the insurance company of the change.

Just a view.

That's what I thought, but only if it exceeded than band that you were in...

Once the engine output has altered then the emission figure may be wrong for the taxation group so the default applies.

If you look back, cars produced before the start of the variable taxation groups (year 2001)would be able to meet the required emission standards for the lower tax groups but are lumpted in with the default group(early VAG TDI engines for example).

You cannot measure the emissions of these cars and opt for the lower taxation group.

Replacing an engine with an identical replacement engine keeps the same taxation group but the engine number has to be supplied to the DVLA
