investigation into a wild oil pressure warning light on 1.8TSI

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I'm currently trying to solve a bit of an enigmaevolving around my 2009 Octavia Mk2I'd like to share with you. The car is with 1.8TSI 118kW engine and 7-speed DSG gearbox (DQ200), currently around 110,000 km (68,000 miles) covered.

So the day before yesterday, while stopping at a read light (had already driven 20+ km), the red oil pressure warning light comes on (+ STOP ENGINE on the MFD accompanied by the horrible sound). Didn't hear any noises or feel anything out of ordinary before shutting down the engine. I checked the oil level, which appeared perfectly fine, and took the car to the service where the oil pressure was checked with a gauge (both on load and idle) - which was totally fine. OK, probably a faulty pressure switch, so I had that changed. Yesterday I collected my car and everything seemed fine for a few km, but then I stopped at a red light and the oil pressure warning light came on again. Before I could do anything, the light was off again and everything seemed normal. I had several several similar incidents that day - the red warning light going on 1-2 seconds after stopping the car and then going off again shortly after that. I also tried turning off and on the engine, which resulted in similar response - the warning light with the sound coming on for a moment and then going off again. Additionally, it only seemed to be occurring with a warm engine. Once the engine had cooled off and I started the engine, the warning light did not appear. However, today I started the car and drove around for a few hours (stopping multiple times along the way), but not a single time the light came on. Which is especially confusing (but somewhat comforting nonetheless).

The weather during the past few days has been significantly colder than before - currently around -5C. So I'm thinking maybe it's the cold that's affecting the switch and somehow making it send false positive signals on borderline cases? Or maybe the oil pressure actually does shortly drop after stopping the car (sadly I know nothing about oil pressure dynamics during engine operation)? If so, what the hell is causing it? Maybe the oil has thickened because of the cold temperatures? If so, why didn't it happen today? Or why does it happen only when the engine is warm?

I have read several threads on oil pressure failures, but haven't thus far found anything matching my peculiar case. Maybe someone has had similar issues or can give any hints on what to look for? Any help is really appreciated!

Cheers!

It may not prove anything, but get the fault codes read.

Also check the plug on the pressure transducer for signs of corrosion, and the wires for breaks where they're visible.

Basically, I'm trying to think of things that throw a false sensor reading that aren't a FUBAR sensor.

Thanks. Here's an update. This is my 5th day without any warning lights (yay!). I haven't had chance to check the wiring (it's still bloody cold outside), but I did have the fault codes read.

So I here are the results (addresses without fault codes have been removed and the timestamps are off):
