Need advice - Skoda 1.8tsi DSG l&k 2010

Featured Replies

Hi

I've recently moved in to UK with my new job. Since i need a practical and comfortable car for daily commute and weekly outing with family, I started looking for my options in the used car market and narrowed to 3 cars.

Option1: Skoda 1.8 tsi l&k DSG 2010, 71000 miles on clock

This is my favorite because i love the dsg gearbox. I was using Octavia 1.9 tdi dsg 2006 model briefly in India and i liked the way it behaved in urban and highway roads. Probably that's the reason why i again looked at Octavia as my first option now.

The mechanical report of this car shown on bca assured website says no mechanical issues, but obviously no warranty. The car had 5 services, all at the main dealer, latest in May 2015. All earlier mot has passed with no advisories. I read the thread about engine failures and wanted to seek opinion from existing owners and enthusiasts before i take a decision to buy. I'll probably get this car for about 5000 gbp and will be using it for my fault commute you work, which is about 3 miles one way and grocery shopping on weekends.

Option 2: Honda insight hybrid 2011 with 65000 miles on clock

A boring drive, but saves money in taxes. It is not as spacious as Octavia, has smaller boot. Might cost the same to maintain factoring the honda parts and battery for hybrid. Cost of this car initially is about 5100 gbp and there's no mechanical report to see. Being a honda i don't think there will be any issues that's big.

Heart says Octavia for the fun of dsg, but I don't want to end up in engine failure mess. The bca assured option does give mechanical report and a 2 day warranty to check and get back to them but i can't test drive as I'll be bidding online.

I don't want to go to a dealer or private seller because I m new to this country and might look like an easy target to fleece. Auctions are not good either, but the mechanical report is more assuring and the cost is much cheaper than a dealer.

Plz pour in your opinions and help me make an informed decision.

Not sure I'd have a 1.8tsi DSG without a warranty.

It has the 7 speed dry clutch DSG unlike your 1.9tdi which would have had the reliable 6 speed wet clutch DSG. The 1.8tsi is at the very upper end of power and torque that the 7 speed dry clutch DSG can handle (it's too powerful for the 7 speed dry clutch in my opinion) and is very prone to expensive problems with the 1.8tsi.

As above I would go for a model with the 6 speed dsg box such as vrs or 1.9-2.0 TDI

You should try car giant website a go as most of the cars are ex lease.

Diesel might not be a good option because i won't be doing motorway commute.. I'll hardly manage ten miles a day, which is not really healthy for new age diesels i believe.

The powershift variants of mondeo are also good but not an enticing package like the Octavia.

You are right about most cars being Ex lease.. I thought lease cars might have had regular servicing compared to aa privately owned car.. The segment of cars I'm looking at are mostly not prone to abuse in lease i thought.. Correct me if I'm wrong
