new VRS owner, few problems

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, just bought a mk1 2004 VRS estate. Coming over from a 2.0s n/a volvo v40. And loving the VRS already, lots planned. However, before i get started on maps, mods etc etc need to address some of the problems of the car. Done a bit of reading on here  but wanted to confirm in my own post and also say hello.

So been reading about this microswitch in the door. Sounds like this could solve some of the problems.

Central locking does not work, this is from the buttons on the fob, turning the key in the door, button on the inside of the door. The bottom on the fob does operate the immobiliser and the alarm (indicators flash but doors do nothing). Microswitch?

Interior light does not turn off when door is shut

All windows do currently work but previous owner said that they can be temperamental. Child lock for rear windows doesn't work

These are the immediate problems i have found/know about so any insight, parts i need, guides, pictures would be most helpful

Max

I suspect the issue is the door loom rather than the driver's door microswitch, but you need to carry out investigations in the same area. It's just the parts you need that may vary.

welcome to briskoda, and the even more glorious world of fixing octavias!

I haven't encountered the door lock issue yet, so can't comment on that - although I would recommend having a check through the fuse board as a quick easy electrical system check. I did this in my first week and fixed a few problems I didn't know I had (rear window wiper was one)!

Fuse number 6 is a 5A, "central locking control unit" if yours is a mk1.. may be the same on the mk2

is there a fuse board inside (where is it) aswel as in the engine bay?

Hi and welcome. As said you need to get the door card off and have a dig about. Issues with the microswitch are common, but then so they are with the loom and window motor module. There is a big multiplug on the window motor and if water has got in there pins can corrode and cause all sorts of problems.

Have a good dig and check for;

Evidence of water ingress

Loom for wear, fractures and breakages particularly where the loom passes the door pillars through those rubber johnnys and near the window regulator/sliders.

While you're in there give the lock mech a big squirt with wd40 you never know you may kick something into life. Can't hurt.

I did a post on checking and protecting multiplugs in the tech section (for n/s front door) and Bowders post on fitting new microswitches in this section gets the drivers door card off and goes through the switch. Most people just fit a Chinese e bay lock mech or get a uses gen one rather than dig out switches, but these 2 posts should help get you started.

..open your drivers door, see that panel on the end of the dashboard? - its behind there

flat screwdriver, or better still plastic scraper from the front will pop it open. (see page 157 of owners manual for fuse identification)

so i checked the fuse board and some are missing

1 (no metal connectors) think thats the mirrors? (don't have the book to hand)

6 (just the one metal connector) central locking?

8 (no connectors)

17 (no connectors)

is that right? why do some just have 1 connector? mirrors and central locking are 2 of the things not working but can't put a fuse in them. Also car been sat for 3/4 days and battery was flat. Yet to take the door apart yet

central locking doesn't work and interior light on door opening (but door open light comes on in speedo) today took door apart and when taking main plug off water came out, thought great that was the problem, female connector missing 2 pins, dam. Soldered 2 new pins on, wd40, blow dry, tape it all up. put door pack and still doesn't work, and now the passengers window won't operate from drivers door, DOH!. I need a new female connector if anyone has one....? also i have a new lock module to put in so lets see what that does
