How good is the 7 speed DSG box mated with the 110ps TSI petrol engine?

Featured Replies

Right then, as the title suggests, can anyone who has driven or owns one of the above motors tell me there opinion on how well the dsg performs and what the 110ps engine is like. Any problems with the box or engines so far?  I current run the Fabia Mk2 estate with 1.6 petrol and Tiptronic 6 speed auto box. I haven't driven the 7 speed dsg Mk3 Fabia yet but intend to. I want some heads up from you guys please before I do so.

Any views or opinions welcomed.

Thanks guys (or girls of course)

I have driven 2 now that i have borrowed, brand new straight from the PDI and i have done 50 miles & 150 with them (a Blue and a Grey) and would not hesitate to have one as a daily driver if on the market for a new car.

I would want an Estate though.

I would say i proceeded with a bit quicker progress than i do in the Mk2 vRS due to the 'Cloak of Invisibility'.

(i was not really 'Driving them in', but did allowed for the Green Tyres and newness of the brakes, and adhered to the NSL's obviously.)

I do not think you will be disappointed when you take a test drive in one.

enjoy.

I have driven 4 years with the older TSI105 paired with a DSG, and that combination was really a dream to drive. For our current Fabia III I did not get the DSG because of the cost, but after 9 months of manual shifting I still miss the DSG.

I got the 7speed DSG estate and absolutely love it, I have only driven my new Fabia 1000km so I have yet to drive it fully loaded with people and luggage up steep hills and longer distances but so far I wouldnt hesitate despite the cost. I drove the diesel variant of this car and didnt like it, the DSG just felt and sounded better :)

I test drove a diesel hatch with dsg as they didn't have a petrol one for me to try. I'm glad I went for the petrol engine for the same reason as kallik. It's much nicer to drive!

I'll have done 3000 miles tomorrow and I've no complaints about any of it so far! The DSG just does it's job and the car can be quite fun to drive with the S mode.

Enjoy your test drive!

Thanks guys, keep the replies coming, particularly from anyone who has driven one with quite a few miles in it. How did it seem, smooth, juddery, engine noisy?? Had any problems with the dual dry clutch?

GoneOffskiroottoot, you have your finger on the pulse of the dsg boxes much more than me. Have you heard of any particular issue recently with these dual dry clutch boxes? Cheers.

Heard nothing about issues or problems recently since they were launched, with the Fabia, Polo or S-tronic in the A1.

With 110ps (Minimum) & a light enough vehicle the DSG is not really being stressed.

They should really have learned by now.

'Vorsprung Durch Technik'.

What they did with the 2015 Polo GTI 192 PS was inhibit the Torque to 250 Nm while the manual car has been given the 320Nm.

Even though they are given the same figures otherwise.

Then the Seat Ibiza Cupra 1.8TSI just gets a manual box.

Brilliant GoneOffski, thanks buddy!

I will happily repeat what I have written before about the TSi 110 DSG Estate SE that I have been driving since April 2015. I have completed 6000 miles in the car so far and I am very pleased with the performance and drivability. At first, I had big problems getting a smooth take off, I think it's the  combination of hill assist and engine stop-start, but I can usually make a sweet take off now but it does need a little more time and care than a manual, probably less than a second, but you have to keep your eye on the lights to be ready to go. If you are alone in the car and don't mind a jumpy start, it's no problem. I have yet to achieve smooth reversing.

It's also useful to move the gear selector to Park when you stop for say 30 seconds or more so that you can put the handbrake on and release the foot brake and then use the start-stop button to start or stop the engine. And I disable the stop-start at roundabouts so that I can judge the lunge into traffic better. Re the stop-start function, I read somewhere that it only saves petrol if the stop is more than 30 seconds but according to the MPG computer, with the engine warm, letting the engine stop for a very short time saves fuel, compared with letting the engine idle for about 5 seconds or longer..

In 'D' mode, you have a very quiet and refined drive, the engine is almost silent. In 'S' mode you can definitely hear the engine. If I floor it in 'S', I am surprised how fast a 1200cc engine can be. In both modes, the gear box seems to guess what is happening, it will hold a lower gear on long downhills and will also change up when you are travelling on a flat road in town with a very light throttle. Also, you can change from 'D' to 'S' to drop down a gear as you approach bends and lights etc. I hardly ever use the manual mode because I find that with 7 gears, you are changing gear constantly. I have once experienced the reported lag when changing mode from 'D' to 'S' when you need full power. There was a lag of something like 1.5 seconds, which was a nuisance. I expect that flooring the pedal in 'D' mode will have the same effect, ie. instant change down, but you may not want max. acceleration.

I don't get the specced consumption figures. I work hard to get 40 mpg around town, I get over 50 mpg on a motorway run. The 110 ps engine and DSG gearbox is a good combination, but it's certainly not an old fashioned auto: you have to think about what you are doing and it responds in a strangely friendly way, most of the time.

I got the estate version because of the boot capacity in a small car and I am not disappointed, also, I think it is much better looking than the hatch. Mine is the basic deep blue and I think the white is better looking but I don't like white cars 'cos they can't be seen in fog.

We have had two 1.2 tsi 105 DSG (one is a roomster), absolute brilliant combination, great around town, and on motorway.

Hardly ever use sport mode or use the manual up/down option as drive is so good and it goes up and down gears seamlessly. You tend to have to look at the dashboard to know what gear it has chosen.

Regarding problems, we did have a problem with juddering on the roomster which happened in its 3rd year (it was a mid 2012 build, when the wrong oil was apparently used), but the dual clutch unit was replaced free under warranty and been silky smooth since. Never had any problems with the DSG in the Fabia.

Fuel consumption is very good, even on short runs in cold weather, falls to nearer 32mpg in London start stop traffic (ours doesn't have start stop, but it is easy to drive when traffic is crawling at walking pace), but mid to high 40s on country roads, probably higher still if you live away from the congested roads of SE England.

Nowadays the only time I drive a manual is hire cars on holidays, and it reminds me why should never buy a manual car nowadays, would strongly recommend the tsi DSG combination.

Just to echo SurreyJohn's post:

In March this year, I part-exchanged my much-loved Roomster 1.9TDI for a 1.2TSI 105 DSG.  Mine is a 2013 ex-Motability vehicle, now with 15,000 miles on the clock.

The 1.2TSI is a jewel of an engine that is surprisingly diesel-like in its production of low-rev torque.  The DSG is a joy to drive and seems particularly well suited to the 1.2TSI.  Mine has been totally reliable and gives fuel consumption figures similar to SurreyJohn's.

My next car will probably be a Yeti with the 1.2TSI/DSG combination.  I would not want to go back to a manual gearbox.

Take a TSI/DSG for a test drive.  You'll love it!

Fabia SE L Hatch, 1.2/110 DSG, 3500 miles since Sept '15. Went for the hatch as the Estate would have been perfect for about 3 days a year. The engine/DSG combination is excellent. The 110 engine is a gem and surprisingly sprightly. It is starting to loosen up now and, without using the 'S' mode it feels about as quick as my old Mk 1 Fabia vRS...but warms up a lot quicker. The DSG 'box is a joy but younsometimes need to play mental games at roundabouts or busy junctions, or pop it into N if the Start/Stop hasn't yet woken up. A little advance planning is needed to get a smooth and quick getaway but that just brings some involvement to driving.

Having moved from a Volvo S60 D5 (185bhp), Geartronic with a mountain of torque, I am very happy with all aspects of the car, except, perhaps, it's noisier...but nomsurprise there. On the plus side, there is more rear leg room, which is surprising.

Would I buy the same again? Yes...and in the same colour; Topaz Brown.

ETA : beginning to suspect the colour make the car invisible to pedestrians and other drivers. Having an increasing number of near-misses with people almost reversing into my car in car parks and...a lady pedestrian almost walked into the side of the car this morning, then looked utterly surprised. Either Topaz Brown is "Cloak of Invisibility" paint or this area has a surfeit of people whomshouldn't be out unsupervised.

Thanks guys, these comments are very helpful. They give me confidence. I'd not want to go back to a manual ever. Auto's are such fun! I'll let you all know how I get on. I've not arranged the test drive yet but it won't be long. Thanks again.

for your reliability worries, I have done over 100k in 2 fabia vRS's with this gearbox, and they never missed a beat :)

Thanks Sharky. So the vRS is a dry clutch unit too. I hadn't realised that even though I've had a vRS engine unit in bits! lol... Didn't do the engine out or engine put back though. Never ever had to touch a dsg box. Clearly a tough little unit....my confidence level has just taken another step up on this dsg magic box. Again thanks.

The DQ200 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch Gearboxes did require a World Wide Recall which did not include all the World like the EU / UK

that later got 'Service Campaign / Recall Actions'

Reason being the No Servicing Required or Oil change needed gearboxes had most filled with Synthetic Oil at the factory.

Then the Internal Corrosion issues started.

So the Service Campaign was to Remove the Synthetic Oil and replace with Mineral and do a Software Update to the DSG ECU.

(While not powered by the cars Battery.  IMPORTANT.)

So this is what Skoda New Zealand did.

They even replaced the Mechatronic Control Units.

http://skoda.co.nz/news/dsg-service-campaign

In the UK this was not just 2009-2011.

DQ200 on 2012,13 & 14 registered cars have had the Service Campaign Field Actions.

http://master.skoda-auto.com/mini-apps/recall-actions

All should be good now. All sorted on the latest products.

In 2015 the Skoda Plant had lots of investments and this was to increase the production of the DQ200 from 1,000 to 1,500 units a day.

I have the 110hp and the 7spd DSG in my monte... absolutely love it..

Smooth changes, very little lag on a kick down. Sport mode is lovely and manual is smooth as hell! I've done 2000miles in mine and its not set a foot out of line so far.

good luck hunting and hope you get what you want.

Just purchased a fully spec'd 2015 Fabia with 7 speed auto. Bought this in Melbourne and drove to Perth (3400km in 48 hours).

Am loving the gearbox and turbo engine together. Goes well fully loaded and fantastic mileage around town.

Considering I bought this without test driving it, very very happy.
