Towbar fitting

Featured Replies

Hi, can anyone recommend a good towbar fitter in the Hull / East Yorkshire area. Main dealer prices seem a bit over the top.

Thanks, Tony

I had my Witter detachable fitted by these guys several years ago, absolutely no issues since...

A bit of a drive to York from Hull though.

Just fitted my own which was a Westfalia detachable towbar and VAG/Westfalia dedicated electrics. The job isn't that difficult to do and will save you a lot of money on fitting labour. Just for comparison I was quoted £910 for the dealer to fit the same towbar and independents were coming in at £660. I managed to get a second hand Westfalia tow bar and electrics for £100 but wasn't happy with electrics as they had the fuse box and can bus connectors cut off so bought new dedicated electrics at £125.00.

The fitting of the tow bar itself is straight forward, remove the rear lights, bumper and cross member. Unhook the last bracket on the exhaust and heat shield, Push the tow bar in place, remove the bolt hole covers, insert and tighten up the bolts. Connect the tow bar electrics plug to the tow bar bracket and into the boot. Then refit the heat shield, exhaust, bumper and lights. The cross member is no longer required.

Electrics is more fiddly but if you take you time easy enough to do. If you don't fancy it then at least insert the cable under the trim from the left side of the boot, over the wheel arch, under the carpet in front of the rear seats and along to under the steering wheel. Then you are just paying for the connection of the electrics. If you do it yourself there are some good links on here to show you what you're doing. With the electrics fitted all the lights are working etc but the parking sensors aren't turned off and the car alarm not extended to the tow bar electrics, for this you will need someone with VCDS to switch it on. For all mine it came to £245, with a new tow bar and electrics from PF Jones you are talking £310 plus £20 for someone to do the VCDS bit and at least you know you haven't had some ape breaking clips on the interior trim.

Witter detachable 1 year ago fitted by Independent at home on behalf of Witter £300 all in.
